Another update on the oft-rumored Canon 7D Mark II points to a release date sometime in the first half of 2014. Previous rumors pointed to a second quarter announcement for the camera, so this latest update remains consistent.
A couple of key new pieces of info point to a price point around $2000 and its positioning as a pro APS-C camera. Additionally, the 7D Mark II is rumored to feature a variation of a new AF system from an unannounced EOS 1 Series camera.
See the below list of previously rumored specs.
Canon 7D Mark II Rumored Specs
- 24.1mp APS-C Sensor
- Dual DIGIC V
- 10fps
- Dual Memory Card Slots (Unknown configuration)
- 61 AF Points
- 3.2? LCD
- Build quality like 5D3
- GPS & Wifi
- $2199 ($500 more than the 7D at launch)
- ISO Performance to get close to the 5D3
- “Lots of video features”
This older spec list still meshes with the new tidbits about the camera that came in the latest rumors today.
If the camera is coming during the second quarter of 2014, as the previous rumors indicated, I still expect to see it just prior to NAB 2014, which kicks off April 5, 2014.

What’s a “price point”? Is that somehow similar to “price”?
Eric Reagan says
Price point means a point on a scale of possible prices at which something might be marketed, which is different from the meaning of price: the amount of money expected, required, or given in payment for something.

I don’t believe the ISO performance will be close to the 5D3, being the 7D a crop sensor camera, the pixel size just won’t let you have that…
I’ll bet the Low nosie at high ISO ratio will be around 1800 or so…

Few years ago after upgraded from T2i to a 7D and enjoyed all the advanced features that 7D had to offer except its disappointing dynamic range and noise compared to T2i. I suspect the 7D2 is going to have the new Dual Pixel sensor similar to the 70D with more pixels (which means, better dynamic range and noise than 7D but poorer than 70D’s 20Mp sensor… more features again and less image quality). By the time 7D2 comes out, the price of 5D3 will drop even more so, I will just get a second 5D3 (which has AMAZING EVERYTHING) or wait for a 5D3 replacement with Wi-Fi & Dual Pixel sensor in 2015/2016.

Shouldn’t those electronic toys be getting cheaper and cheaper? Isn’t it what technology development is about?
I also expect Canon to make 7D2 a noisy camera, otherwise it would be too good and sales of more expensive 5D3 would go down. Canon doesn’t want that. It will be the same story as with 7D and 5D2.

I have the Canon 7D and it is an outstanding camera. I certainly hope Canon adds this camera and a feature list equal to or even better than what shows above. I would like to add another camera body to my arsenal, and adding this wonderful feature list to an already incredible camera, would be a welcomed addition.
The rumors and discussions will continue, but I hope Canon will deliver, and keep the noise level very low, too. Not just for product games-manship and marketplace positioning, but for delivering a superior and industry-leading quality product. Sometimes you have to step out front and lead. Canon, it is your time.
