Recent rumors suggest that Canon will unveil three new lenses at Photokina 2014. Those lenses are believed to be the following.
- EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM
- EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
- EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM
The 24mm is rumored to be a pancake-sized lens that is probably along the size and performance of the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM but just an EF-S lens. The 24-105mm would be a nice lens to package as a kit with the Canon 6D or any other low-end, full frame DSLR that comes out in the future. And, the 400mm DO lens will replace the current EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM model with improved optical performance.

I’m not certain I understand the 24-105 f/3.5-5.6, when there is the 24-105 f/4. Unless, and I’m guessing this is the reason, it’s not a L-grade lens.

My guess is the 6D kit option is the primary reason. Instead of a $1100 lens, you’re probably looking at a $600-ish lens.

Hope the 24mm pancake price is decent – the 40mm was a bit high at launch and wasn’t really “worth it” until a few months later when the used market picked up. Then the canon refurbs were priced really well to compete. That’s when I picked up. It’s a cool lens – light and compact, and the STM is quieter than the 18-135 for sure. Would absolutely use a 24mm more often than the 40mm on EFS.
