New rumors suggest that the Canon 5D Mark IV would arrive until later in 2015 as a true replacement for the 5D Mark III, well after the Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R starts shipping.
The 5D Mark III just got a nice price drop, which should keep sales up. And that could end up delaying the release of the 5D Mark IV with sort of an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach.
Other rumors have pointed to a Canon 5D Mark IV announcement in the August/September time frame and that the specs include:
- 28MP
- 9fps
- 4K video
If that’s the case, it matches up against the spec sheet of the Samsung NX1. Of course, there are other features (like a full frame sensor) that should set the 5D Mark IV a little further apart.
Additionally, both the 5D Mark IV and rumored 1D X update are expected to see a “significant advance in Canon’s flash control capabilities.” Could that mean that we will finally see a Canon body with a built-in radio trigger for flash control?
I began reporting on those possibilities as seen in Canon patents as far back as 2010 and again in 2011 before we saw the release of the Canon ST-E3-RT radio transmitter and 600EX-RT Speedlite. The patents referenced a camera body that included a built-in radio transmitter, which we have yet to see.

I’d love to see WiFi and NFC. Even Nikon is starting to do that now.
Well, the Canon T6i and T6s have it… so there’s hope.
I just wish the connectivity process was cleaner than what we’ve seen on prior Canon DSLRs. (And that pretty much applies to all cameras to date.)
What I’d like to know is what will Canon do about the autofocus and metering systems. Will they be the same or more robust than what is available on the recent 7D Mark II?
Besides the much better ISO performance my biggest wants/needs if I can move into full-frame goodness is for the ability to keep up with the 7D Mark II’s performance envelope for such matters, since I shoot a fair bit of sports and wildlife as well.
I sure would like GPS included, instead of having to buy a separate piece of equipment at a pretty outrageous price. And it would be great if they could somehow reduce the weight a bit.
This camera recommender is nonsense and is biased to Canon. It should have reccomended a Nikon D810 !!
For me the biggest needs are a synchronistation speed of 1/250s instead of the 1/200 and also low ISO of 50.
If there will be a crop mode (like the 5Ds) make te camera also accept EF-S lenses. A nice feature to attract APS-C shooters to switch to full frame and buy full frame lenses over time. Canon missed this opportunity in the 5Ds
Not physically possible to put an EF-s lens on a full-frame body. At least not without destroying the mirror.
Jared, this is the part where Canon’s ability to think out of the box and for innovation can surprise customers and competition. When was the last time they really caused a real jawdropping experience to customers? And remember it is just a wish?
