This could very well be a low-res image of Canon’s upcoming EF 50mm f/1.8 IS STM lens, which has been rumored for quite some time. Photo Rumors received the image from a tipster with no further details about announcement time frame or availability.
Even from the low resolution image, it looks like it has a better build quality and certainly has a better focus ring that the $125 Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. Of course, with Image Stabilization and the STM motor inside, I suspect this lens will run quite a bit higher than the “nifty fifty” seen below.
Even though it is rumored as a 50mm f/1.8 lens, that larger front element makes it look more like the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, which is also ripe for replacement.
I could actually see it slotting in better as a replacement for the 1.4 lens at $500-$600 because it is almost certainly not intended to replace the cheap 50mm f/1.8 lens.
Regardless of whether it is an f/1.8 or f/1.4 prime, is should slot in nicely alongside Canon’s other recent prime lens updates like the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM and the EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM lens.

Lol, more as in 6 times the price? It would be nice if it was under $200 like the pancakes but if it has stabilization no chance. That said I’ll likely buy it if its under $400 assuming its great performer. Over 5 & I’d need some heavy convincing.
