DxO has announced a new camera, the DxO ONE, which attaches to an iPhone’s Lightning port and works with an iOS app. The DxO ONE features a 20.2MP 1″ CMOS sensor that will capture RAW format images, along with a new SuperRAW Plus format that automatically merges four RAW files into one.
The DxO ONE swivels +/- 60° at the base of the iPhone, which essentially allows the iPhone to act as a tilting LCD display. It features a bright f/1.8 lens that will stop down to f/11 and the shutter speed offers a range from 15s to 1/8000s. Sensitivity covers ISO 100-51,200.
The camera offers full auto mode, along with shutter priority, aperture priority and full manual modes, along with various scene modes. The DxO ONE also captures video at 1080/30p or 720/120p frame rates.
Images can be stored to the built-in microSD memory card and can also be automatically stored in the iPhone’s camera roll as you shoot.
DxO describes the new SuperRAW format workflow as follows:
For the ultimate in noise-free image quality – even in very low light – users can choose to capture images in DxO’s new SuperRAW format. A SuperRAW file is the result of 4 RAW frames captured in quick succession. When the DxO ONE camera is connected to a Mac or PC, the DxO Connect companion software automatically merges the four images together using the very latest in spatial and temporal noise reduction.
The new SuperRAW Plus format allows the DxO ONE to achieve a DxO Mark Sensor Score of 85 (compared to 70 for standard RAW files).
DxO puts a lot of stock into these numbers, noting that the camera’s standard RAW files outscore the Sony RX100 III, which achieves a Sensor Score of 67.
The DxO Mark Sensor Score of 85 for SuperRAW Plus files puts the DxO ONE on par with cameras like the Nikon D7200 and the Sony A7S (both with a score of 87) and it bests cameras like the 5D Mark III (81) and the 7D Mark II (70).
The DxO ONE is available for pre-order only at dxo.com is expected to ship in September 2015 for the US and Q4 for Europe.
The DxO ONE retails for $599 and, for a limited time, ships with free licenses for DxO Optics Pro ELITE Edition (reg. $199) and DxO FilmPack ELITE Edition (reg. $129). Check it out here on DxO’s website.
I can’t figure out if I think this is awesome or crazy. Or crazy awesome.
I agree. And, I have to wonder about the connection getting broken.
