Tokina has announced a new standard zoom lens – the Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX lens for Canon and Nikon mounts. It works with both full frame and APS-C format DSLRs.
The lens comes in at a very reasonable $999, compared to $1900 for Canon’s EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens and Nikon’s AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens.
The new Tokina full frame lens features 15 elements in 11 groups with a 9-bladed aperture and an 82mm filter diameter. It has three all-glass aspherical elements and three SD super-low dispersion elements.
The focusing is entirely internal and features Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, which allows photographers to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the lens mount for manual focusing.
At 2.2lbs, the new Tokina is lighter than its Canon counterpart (2.6lbs) and only slightly heavier than the Nikon version (1.98lbs).
The Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 PRO FX lens should be available in August for Nikon and Canon mounts only. Again, the price is $999. Check it out here at B&H Photo.

Would be nice to see Tokina & Sigma release their lenses for Fuji and Micro 4/3 … that will cover a very large spectrum of cameras out in the market and would be interesting to see how well they get adopted in the mirrorless only systems.
