The Canon 5D X model name has been tossed around a lot lately, primarily coming from one forum member at DP Review who claims to have insider info. Some of the specs and features mentioned about the 5D X are consistent with past rumors and he now claims to have a more concrete list of spec highlights.
Canon 5D X Rumored Specs
- 28MP sensor
- 12fps
- Dual Pixel AF III
- New and more advanced AF system
- Anti-flickr technology (seen first on the EOS 7D Mark II)
- Crop mode (featured on the EOS 5Ds)
- ISO 100-204.800 (expandable to 409.600)
None of these features are necessarily shocking – aside from maybe the 12fps still image frame rate in a 5D body. That seems like a pretty ridiculous jump for the 5D X. He goes on to say that the 5D X will be announced either next month at the Canon Expo in NYC or in October around PhotoPlus. Regardless of whether this is reliable info, I suspect Canon will have some nice surprises in store for at least one of these events.
Moving on to the second interesting rumor is the claim that Canon will introduce a 5D C model (akin to the 1D C in the top-end line).
Canon 5D C Rumored Specs
- 18MP
- 61 point AF system
- ISO 100-204.800
- 4k video (source uncertain on frame rate)
- Dual Pixel AF III
- Many advanced video features
- Features taken from Canon’s Cinema cameras
The Canon 5D C mention isn’t consistent with the lead up of rumors to this point. And that seems like it would add too many models in the 5D range.
We’ll know sooner or later whether we are being trolled or whether these cameras are actually the real deal. Given the two major photography events mentioned above are just around the corner, I think we’ll learn something sooner rather than later.
If anyone has info that can corroborate or debunk these rumors, feel free to pass it along to me via the contact form. You can also email me directly at contact@photographybay.com. And feel free to speculate away in the comment section below.
In the mean time, take all of these rumors with a grain or two of salt.
[Update: This looks like a rehash of an older rumor from April on Canon Watch, which they rated as a rumor from a known source that has proven right in the past.]
All these specs have been posted on canon watch back in April:
