Western Digital has released a new 3.5″ format 10TB hard drive in the HGST Ultrastar He10. The new 10TB adds to the HelioSeal line of drives that are helium-filled for more efficient operation (56% more efficient that traditional air-filled drives).
The Ultrastar He10 is preceded by 6TB and 8TB versions and is the third-generation in the enterprise line. HGST’s spec sheet rates the data transfer speeds at an impressive 249MB/s for the new 10TB model (up from 225MB/s in the 8TB model). With an annual failure rate of 0.35%, it includes a 5-year reliability warranty.
No word yet on pricing but the 8TB model currently runs $599, so expect it to come in north of that mark when it hits shelves soon.

With helium in short supply, designs like this are likely to stay expensive.
But not as expensive as a liquid helium cooled MRI machine!
