Tony Northrup posted a video talking about future cameras and specs and what he thinks is coming next from several camera makers. You can watch the video above. Notable cameras in his prediction list include:
- Canon 6D Mark II at Photokina
- Canon 7D Mark III at Photokina
- Canon 5D Mark IV (75MP) in 2017
- Sony A9 (24MP) at Photokina
- Sony A9R (75MP) at Photokina
- Sony A7 III in 2017
- Sony A7S III in 2017
- Sony A7R III in 2017
- Nikon D820 in 2017
I’m banking on a 5D Mark IV this year, so I disagree with him on that one. I think Canon has pretty clearly separated the 5Ds and the 5D Mark III camera lines, which is why I think it is okay to expect a 5D Mark IV this year. The others are up in the air for me. I also agree that the Sony A-mount is done, which is something I’ve said for years. What do you guys think about these predictions?

I thought the predictions were pretty for off. Particularly 75MP for anything mentioned. Canon has the 5Ds with 50MP, so why would they put 75MP in the 5D Mark IV. Clearly wrong there. Also, Tony predicts a 6D Mark II and a 7D Mark III BEFORE a 5D Mark IV. The 7D Mark II is only a year old. It won’t get a Mark III for a while. And it is pretty clear the 6D will only get updated after the 5D Mark IV comes out. I don’t see Nikon putting out a 75 MP camera anytime soon, or even anytime. Sony on the other hand… they are being super aggressive, so maybe… maybe a 75MP. But I don’t believe so.

Here’s my prediction!
Sony and Canon and Nikon and Pentax and Olympus and Panasonic will all have new cameras coming within the next year. They’ll probably have a couple new features, and higher pixel counts compared to the existing models they’re aiming to directly replace! I am going to regurgitate a few numbers from all the rumor sites I read, and possibly make up a few of my own that will get the internet talking without having to actually back anything up, nor bring anything of substance to the conversation!!! It will be fun. Look at me! Look at ME! LOOK AT MEEEEE!
That anyone still humors Tony Northrup anymore is beyond me. I think he just turns the camera on and spits out whatever is going on in his mind at the time. I guess it gets hits, and people talking… but we’re all dumber for listening to him ramble, and continuing to entertain his clickbait garbage.
No thanks,Tony. No thanks.

I think Tony is out to lunch. I have some inside info, and this last set of earthquakes did some serious damage to the Sony Sensor plant, so they don’t have the time right now to develop 75 mp sensors, they are having enough trouble just keeping up with demand of the existing sensor chips.
Also think about it. Mathmatically, we crossed the usefulness of extra pixels at about 36mp, certainly 50. There is no need to have that many pixels on a sensor.
For real improvement in the next line of cameras, there are lots of choices.
1. 4K video at 60fps/120fps…etc
2.Higher ISO sensitivity without noise. Who wouldn’t want that in our world of no flash and low light photography?
3. Higher frame rates. Sports, Wildlife and kid photographers would love to see the ability to capture 30fps.
4. Improved AF. None of the manufacturers are making improvements in that way. My new MFT cameras don’t have the ability to lock in center point focus – without turning off the touch screen.
5. Speaking of touch screens – they could be a lot better.
6. More attention to Audio Both quality and inputs/outputs.
Any big changes will be in the above areas, not sensor size. Sorry Tony.

Good to see lot of enthusiasm and feedback of perdition’s for the next canon – in reality, Canon has to do lot to compete as market momentum is features and more image processing in camera plus a lighter body
Innovation a must and new comers like light, using science may one day beat what the glass has done for a decades
Features like USB Type C and SD card are very obvious progression but what’s needed in in camera…perhaps even build in changer to eliminate carrying a bulky box would be an-obvious plus
Would be good to see Cell phone compatible connectivity via BLE/BT/Wi-Fi interface to access data and camera control plus preview. How about new Pro indoor/outdoor two settings for wedding photographers than the usual dial borrowed from the 30’s cameras. Capability to read pdf or pre-entered notes on shoot would be great…
Really, what I am talking about are features like trigger on motion detection based on zones, long time laps and even shutter with accumulated imaging to give equivalent of high “f” stops for long exposure that can only be done by adding number on ND filters that effect imaging quality since most cameras do not go below 100ASA or how about focus stacking etc
it would be nice to have even anti-shake that take care of the predicted judder from mirror or shutter movement…this is different to the image stabilization but more a camera’s internal motion comp from mirror/shutter…My list goes on innovation and have written many prior features that could make a next gen camera quite remarkable
Cell phones offer unbelievable new features but I guess patents or not invented hear is holding back innovation in the large Co-operations like Canon but equally there competitors too
It would be great to see canon put a sensor larger than 35mm in the current body and offer an adapter to use current lens with crop or new line of lenses. The advantage is obvious and larger sensor would offer not only high pixel count but huge dynamic range. Users will be able to use current full frame lens or start to collect new series to take advantage of the new large format sensor….like the APS Vs. full frame but more of a move towards owning the Hasselblad’s X1D 50Mpix medium format sensor with option to use canon L series glass more effectively
Let’s wait and see what comes out this year as the 5D replacement is long overdue

So to answer some of these concerns znajam, Magic Lantern addresses quite a few of them:
– Long exposures and timer options are added through ML (http://www.magiclantern.fm/)
– ML has auto zone (movement detection etc) and lightning detector triggering
– ML has focus stacking/racking
– ML has exposure racking
Mirror lock-up my address camera shake due to long exposures. This is part of Canons’ extra settings..
Manfrotto’s Digital Director allows wi-fi connection for older cameras whereas the 5D-MKIII has wi-fi.
Agreed about Type-C USB. Larger sensors are a square-law cost thing for silicon. Yeild drastically drops as the die size gets bigger.
