Canon EOS 500D Review at DP Review

June 11, 2009 By Eric Reagan

DP Review has posted a review of the Canon EOS 500D (aka Rebel T1i).

All the major manufacturers cram more and more new features into their ‘budget’ offerings but the EOS 500D is arguably the currently best specced camera in the segment, which lifts it some distance above pure ‘entry level’ territory.

Canon Rebel T1i vs. Nikon D5000 Review – ISO Comparison Part II

June 9, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The Canon Rebel T1i and Nikon D5000 are the two new consumer-level DSLRs from the leading brands in the business right now.  Over the past month or so, I’ve shot extensively, almost exclusively, with these new DSLRs.  While there are a number of features that make these cameras stand out, the one that I keep coming back to is their ability to manage noise, even at higher ISOs.

Both cameras do something new in the entry-level category by turning up the sensitivity. The Canon Rebel T1i tops out at ISO 12800, while the Nikon D5000 pushes its sensitivity one-stop lower to ISO 6400.  In my day-to-day shooting, I would have no problem shooting with either camera at ISO 3200 for snapshots that will make my wife or mom happy to have in the family photo album.  Truth be told, they probably wouldn’t notice the difference between ISO 3200 and ISO 6400 in either camera.  The Rebel T1i’s spec of ISO 12800 may be a bit much for most applications; however, in a bind, you can likely get some decent black and whites at that level.

To see how the Canon Rebel T1i and Nikon D5000 stack up against each other, as well as the Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D700, read on. [Read more…]

Canon 60D = Turbocharged 50D?

June 8, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The latest rumors to surface from the never-ending stream of sources over at Canon Rumors pegs the Canon 60D as somewhat of a turbocharged version of the Canon 50D.  Here’s the latest potential spec list:

  • 15.1 megapixels
  • ISO 100-25600
  • 7 fps
  • Digic V
  • Movie-mode: 1080p with 30 and 24fps
  • built in GPS for geo-tagging
  • only a SD-card slot (no CF)
  • 148×109x75mm and 738g

Everything else, remains as-is from the current 50D.  This spec-list is similar to what we’ve seen in previous Canon 60D / 7D rumors.

Granted, those specs don’t make for much of a slouch DSLR.  That 15.1 megapixel sensor has served well in the 50D and the Rebel T1i.  I, for one, would certainly welcome another round of it with improved noise control – particularly after seeing how well the Rebel T1i performs at ISO 3200-6400.  We sure don’t need any more pixels in these crop-sensor DSLRs until we get noise under control and perhaps some better glass to fully take advantage of the resolution.

Canon Powershot SX200 IS Review at Neutral Day

June 6, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Neutral Day has posted a review of the Canon Powershot SX200 IS.

Overall performance may not win blue ribbons in any given category, but the SX200 IS does most things very well, with an approachable interface, enough controls for enthusiasts to be happy with, a competent lens, and yes, it even takes great pictures.

Canon Rebel T1 / 2000D Coming Soon?

June 6, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The rumor mill is gaining momentum concerning a Canon Rebel T1 / 2000D, which would play second fiddle in Canon’s Rebel lineup behind the Canon Rebel T1i / 500D.  Recent rumors point to a June 2009 release – perhaps within a handful of days.

Bear in mind, however, that there have been speculation and rumors concerning such a camera (i.e., a replacement to the Rebel XS) since before PMA.  The folks at Canon Rumors are staying on top of things with the most recent rumor suggesting that the camera could even come next week.

Canon 1Ds Mark IV and 1D Mark IV in 2009?

June 2, 2009 By Eric Reagan

DSLR Magazine thinks so.

As published in our of our April 23, Canon shall, before the end of the year 2009, two new high-end professional models.

They go on to say that one of the models will maintain the smaller-than-full-frame sensor (i.e., the 1D Mark IV) and the 1Ds Mark III successor will be the expected evolution of its predecessor.  With the new 1Ds, Canon aiming stronger toward the medium format audience, which will entail even more megapixels.  Finally, the author points out a successor/alternative to the G10 will surface, around 9-megapxels though, with lower noise than the G10.

Firmware version 1.1.0 for the Canon 5D Mark II is now available.  This firmware update adds the much-sought-after manual exposure control to the video mode, which expands the creative appeal of this camera even further.  I’ve been tinkering with the updated firmware settings for the past little while and think it’s some pretty powerful stuff.
