Nikon D5500 Memory Card Speed Test

March 29, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D5500-2

Memory cards matter quite a bit when it comes to your expectations and experience with a DSLR. The Nikon D5500 accepts most modern SD cards, including SDHC and SDXC cards, and takes advantage the speed boost from UHS-I (Ultra-High Speed Type I bus) cards. For a broader explanation of SD card types and designations, see my prior article Demystifying SD Cards.

Below, I have tested a few different memory cards in the Nikon D5500 to demonstrate the positive effects of buying a more capable memory card and to highlight some specifications of particular cards that might make them a better fit for the D5500 and similar cameras. [Read more…]

Nikon D5500 Real World Sample Photos

March 28, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D5500

The Nikon D5500 is a great little camera that bridges the gap between true beginner and the well-established photographer. It can work on either end of that spectrum and fits the needs of a variety of photographers in-between. As the D5xxx series continues to slowly evolve, this one reminds me of just how far we’ve come in the past six or eight years of DSLRs.

I’m working on a full review but I wanted to share some real world photos that I’ve shot with the D5500 ahead of that review. [Read more…]

Lens Patent for Nikon 1 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Lens

March 16, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Nikon_70-300mm_Lens

A recently published patent application reveals a new version of the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR lens for the Nikon 1 system. The optical formula in the patent focuses on make the lens more compact to accommodate the smaller Nikon 1 system.

Of course, the patent was just published on only filed back in October 2014, so don’t expect the lens anytime soon since the current version just started shipping a few months ago (it was announced in March 2014 alongside the Nikon 1 V3) and is still not regularly in stock (currently backordered at B&H).
