Nikon Coolpix L110 Review

June 15, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon Coolpix L110 is a 12.1-megapixel superzoom camera with a 15x optical zoom equivalent to 28-420mm on a 35mm camera.  While a 15x zoom isn’t quite at the top of the superzoom food chain today, two or three years ago that was about the best you could buy.  Nowadays, 15x zoom cameras are your entry-level superzooms, and the Nikon L110 is targeted squarely at the novice user in terms of its controls and usability.

To see how the Nikon L110 measures up, read on. [Read more…]

Nikon Coolpix S3000 Review

June 9, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon Coolpix S3000 is a 12-megapixel, ultra-compact camera.  The S3000 is quite a basic point and shoot camera that’s really just a step or so up from the bottom-end Nikon L22.  The S3000 has a decent 4x optical zoom, equivalent to a 27-108mm zoom range on a 35mm camera.

If you’re looking for cheap and thin in your digital camera, read on to see if the Nikon S3000 works for you. [Read more…]

Nikon Coolpix L22 Review

May 27, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon Coolpix L22 is a 12-megapixels, budget-friendly compact camera that is powered by 2 AA batteries.  Nikon’s target for the L22 is clearly a casual snapshooter who isn’t really interested in thinking about photography.  It’s basic.  It’s simple.  It’s cheap.

To see whether this bargain-basement bare bones camera fits your bill, read on. [Read more…]

Nikon D90 Goes 3D

May 24, 2010 By Eric Reagan

StereoPortraitProjectRig-nikon-d90

That’s 2 Nikon D90s rigged to be about the same distance apart as the human eyes.

The Stereo Portrait Project was put together by Alex Fry and Jamie Nimmo.  These guys assembled the custom rig shown above to capture Anaglyphic 3D images.  They’ve even put together a book featuring their 3D images.

Head over to Nikon Rumors for a full rundown of the setup and art behind the Stereo Portrait Project.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II Lens

April 27, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Nikon AF-S 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II lens is the third lens that Nikon has announced since February of this year (and I’ve been told they’re just rolling their sleeves up).  The new lens serves as an update to the original 200-400mm f/4 lens.  As was the case with the previously announced lenses (AF-S 16-35mm f/4 VR II and AF-S 24mm f/1.4), the new 200-400mm lens carries on the trend of lenses compatible with Nikon’s growing FX-format line of DSLRs.

Like the AF-S 300mm f/2.8 VR II lens released near the end of 2009, the new AF-S 200-400mm lens gets more of a facelift in updates, as opposed to a complete redesign.  Obviously, the VR II feature is one of the headliners, which Nikon claims delivers an additional 4-stops of handholdability.  The new 200-400mm also receives a new nano-crystal coat on the glass to reduce ghosting and flare.  The lens also gets a third focusing mode, A/M, which prevents slight and unintentional movements of the focus ring from canceling the autofocus while shooting.

The 200-400mm VR II lens includes 4 ED elements for what should be exceptional image quality, if we assume the results of the updated 70-200mm f/2.8 and 300mm f/2.8 will transfer to this lens as well.  The increased resolving power of the ED elements should pave the way for future, higher-resolution Nikon DSLRs, which are sure to come.

The AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II lens will carry a retail price tag of $6999.95, which is about $900 over the current street price of the existing model.  The new lens should be available sometime in late May 2010.

Check availability on B&H Photo, Amazon and Adorama.

The Nikon Coolpix P100 is a 10.3 megapixel camera with a massive 26x zoom range, covering an equivalent focal length of 26-678mm.  The P100 is packed with features and cool shooting modes that help set it apart from other cameras on shelf.  To see whether all these features add up to a camera that’s right for you, read on. Nikon P100 Video Sample at 240 fps

April 2, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The above video was shot with a Nikon P100 at its highest video frame rate of 240 fps, which provides the cool slow motion effect.  The apparent spontaneous exploding orange and water jug were courtesy of the impact from a 55 grain hollow point .223 caliber bullet traveling at approximately 3000 feet per second.  Even the 240 fps frame rate is not fast enough to capture something traveling that fast.
