June 16, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus E-PL5

Olympus has issued firmware updates for the PEN E-PL5 and PEN E-PM2. The new firmware provides the following improvements:

  1. Improved stability of touch panel operation during playback
  2.  Support for new VF-4 electronic viewfinder (automatic display switching by the VF-4 eye sensor is not supported)

Additionally, support for the new VF-4 EVF has been added to firmware updates for the following Olympus cameras: OM-D E-M5, PEN E-P2, E-P3, E-PL1, E-PL2, E-PL3, E-PM1 and XZ-2.

There are two options for updating the firmware:

  1. Launch the included Olympus camera software and connect the camera via USB cable to an internet connected computer. Choose the Update function from the Camera menu in the software to apply available updates for camera bodies, lenses and accessories.
  2. Download the software updater from the following link: http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_downloads_updater.asp and follow the installer instructions.

With each method, users can choose to display information related to what the update will apply, prior to performing the update.

Olympus to Supply Sony with Lens Parts; Olympus 400mm f/4 Lens Coming for Sony Alpha?

May 29, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus Lenses for Sony NEX

Sony became the largest shareholder of Olympus in September 2012. Since then, we’ve waited for the relationship to lead to more collaboration between the companies.

Olympus recently revealed that it will soon being supplying lens parts to Sony. According to an Olympus spokesperson,

The imaging sensor has already started to source from Sony to Olympus. And the lens [parts] and lens units will start to source from Olympus to Sony.

While Olympus refused to specify the extent of the lens parts supplies to Sony, rumors suggest that Olympus will develop a 400mm f/4 lens for Sony Alpha A-mount cameras to be unveiled in early 2014.

Olympus Glasses Built-in Camera

Olympus has submitted a patent application in Japan for what looks like a camera-centric Google Glass unit. The Olympus glasses feature a built-in camera and display; however, little else is revealed concerning the camera’s functionality – and it’s hard to imagine connected glasses units from Olympus that would offer greater connectivity than what we see in Google Glass. Several more images of the Olympus E-P5 have leaked out ahead of Friday’s announcement as a long-awaited replacement for the Olympus E-P3.  The camera is rumored to feature the same 16MP sensor as found in the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and is modeled after the old Olympus PEN F film camera from yesteryear. The E-P5 can also capture full HD 1080/30p video at 20Mbps bit rate and should include built-in WiFi. [Read more…]

More Olympus E-P5 Images Leak Out

May 1, 2013 By Eric Reagan

e-p5_t1

The upcoming Olympus E-P5 is turning out to be a very poorly kept secret. The first photo of the new Micro Four Thirds camera leaked out last week, and now we have three more images.

The E-P5’s controls have undergone somewhat of a change from the layout of the E-P3‘s controls. And to confirm the model name, note the branding in the top image (see bottom right corner) with the model ‘E-P5’ inscribed on the camera. [Read more…]

Olympus PEN E-P5 Leaks Out

April 25, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus E-P5

After yesterday’s teaser from Olympus of a new PEN camera due out in early May, the Olympus E-P5 appears to have leaked out ahead of its official announcement. As previously rumored, it closely resembles the design of the old Olympus PEN F.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 is expected to be announced by May 11, 2013. The camera is rumored to feature the same 16MP sensor as found in the Olympus OM-D E-M5. Additional rumors suggest an improved AF speed that will best the highly-regarded E-M5.

Personally, I think this is one very attractive camera – even more so if the AF speed is as fast as rumored.

Olympus E-P5 and E-PL6 Coming Soon…?

April 23, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Olympus E-PL5

Recent rumors suggest that Olympus will be updating its E-Px and E-PLx series soon. The next generation should carry the logical names of E-P5 and E-PL6, which obviously would serve as replacements for the E-P3 (the number ‘4’ is considered bad luck in Japanese culture) and E-PL5, respectively.
