Canon EOS 50D Review at Digital Camera Review

November 10, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Digital Camera Review has posted a review of the Canon 50D.

The 50D continues to prove that Canon has one of the fastest (if not the fastest) AF systems, extremely high-resolution CMOS sensors with very impressive high ISO performance, and now offers (for some users, at least) a functional live view system.

The LX3 is an example of a species so endangered that the we were beginning to worry it had become extinct – a compact camera that photographers can get excited about.

Nikon D3x German Leak?

November 8, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Could this be the next version of the Nikon D3 that popped up on the Nikon Germany website?  Here’s a closer look:

What’s a Nikon D3 2 folder doing just below the Nikon D3 and D300 folders?  A Nikon D3x, a different folder for the Nikon D3’s updated firmware, or just a spare folder for all the Nikon D3 stuff?

I dunno, but crunch time is closing in for the 24MP rumored camera.  See this Nikon D3x rumor for the last word on the topic.

Canon 5D Mark II Pre-Order and Shipping Status

November 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

It seems that the Canon 5D Mark II has enjoyed an overwhelming pre-order response.  Some stores, including big, online stores, have stopped taking pre-orders for the 5D Mark II.

One of the places still taking pre-orders is Ritz (here’s the link).  They’re still accepting pre-orders for the 5D Mark II (body only) and kit with the 24-105mm L lens.  If you’re wanting one for Christmas, it might be a good idea to go ahead and get in line.  Both Amazon and Adorama have pulled their pre-order capabilities for now.

Finally, word is building toward shipping dates in the US around November 20-22.  That means some of you lucky folks will be shooting your turkey dinner with 21.1 megapixels.

Canon PowerShot E1 Review at PhotographyBLOG

November 6, 2008 By Eric Reagan

PhotographyBLOG has published a review of the Canon PowerShot E1.

The soft curves and the fashionable colours may indeed work with kids and teens, but the whole point of a stylish camera is compromised by the poor build quality and the use of low-grade materials.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion

November 6, 2008 By Eric Reagan

O’Reilly has just announced the release of their Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion. It’s $24.99 and, as the title implies, covers the functionality of the Canon Rebel XS.  I recently published a review of the Rebel XSi version of this book (also by Ben Long) and was generally impressed with the content.  I can’t imagine that the Rebel XS version will be much different in terms of quality.  So, if you’re picking up the Rebel XS, this would probably be a good book to grab with it.  Details in the press release below.  It’s available for pre-order at Amazon.com for $16.49.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion–New from O’Reilly

Packed with Practical Advice You Can Take Anywhere

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion Sebastopol, CA—If you’re thinking about investing in a new Canon Rebel camera, you’ll definitely want to check out the latest books from O’Reilly’s popular Companion series.

Noted photographer Ben Long’s The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS 1000D Companion ($24.99) serves as a full-on photography class built specifically around the XS. Ben also authored The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D Companion ($24.99), which is tailored specifically for people who use that camera. [Read more…]

This is the first unofficial video made with Canon 5D Mark II that I’ve seen.  I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Seagate Fall Photo Contest Update

November 5, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Some great entries are rolling into the Seagate Fall Photo Contest.  See them here in the Photography Bay Flickr Group Pool.

Don’t miss out on your chance to win a Seagate FreeAgent Go Drive by submitting your best “Fall” photo in accordance with the contest rules.  Seagate is giving 3 of these drives away.

You can learn more about the Seagate FreeAgent Go Drives here.  You can also connect with Seagate via their Facebook page and win a number of other prizes in the FreeAgent Inspires Locker Art Design Competition.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Please don’t forget to read the rules.  Entrants may only submit one photo to the contest.  I’ve seen a few duplicate submissions and I would hate for anyone to miss out on the contest by doing this.  So long as they are removed by the time the contest closes, you will be ok.  Just don’t forget to remove the duplicate submission and post your single best photo.
