Sony A700 Review at Photography Review

December 25, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Photography Review has published a featured user review of the Sony A700.

This camera has the ergonomics, ease of use, and overall quality I have always had with Minolta’s high end film cameras.

Olympus E-30 Initial Impressions Review at Photography Review

December 16, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Photography Review has published an initial impressions review of the Olympus E-30.

I have to admit I was skeptical and felt like they were probably meant for someone else. But when I started to play with the Art Filters, I got kind of excited at the some of the results. And the perfectionist in me was pleased that you can shoot RAW + JPG and have an untouched RAW image available if you need it.

Ricoh GR Digital II Review at Serious Compacts

December 15, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Serious Compacts has published a review of the Ricoh GR Digital II.

Given that it features an f/2.4 lens and a 1/1.75″ sensor, I expected the GRD to perform well in low light. Overall it has met my expectations, although my impression from use is that the GRD sensor isn’t quite in the same league as the Panasonic LX3 and Canon G10 sensors when it comes to noise performance at high ISO.

Canon 50D Review

December 15, 2008 By Eric Reagan

On August 26, 2008, Canon announced the EOS 50D and shook things up a bit by breaking their traditional 18-month refreshment cycle for the amateur model lineup.  Every xxD model since the 10D had been released at 18-month intervals until the 50D, which came in just 12 short months after the Canon EOS 40D.

With the announcement, the Canon 50D brought two big headline features – 15.1 megapixels and an ISO equivalent of 12,800.  Since the introduction of the Canon Rebel XTi a couple of years back, the xxD series has lagged behind the lower-end Rebel series in terms of the number of megapixels found on the sensor (e.g., XTi w/ 10MP vs. 30D w/ 8MP; XSi w/ 12MP vs. 40D w/ 10MP).  This is no longer the case with the 50D.  Instead of just matching the resolution of the latest Rebel camera, the 50D jumped out in front by a somewhat sizeable margin.

The Canon 50D is available in three different kits, all of which are available at Amazon.com and a number of other camera retailers:

Canon 50D (body only)

Canon 50D Kit with 28-135mm IS Lens

Canon 50D Kit with 18-200mm IS Lens

While the grumblings of many photographers have grown louder and louder in the image quality vs. megapixel debate, camera manufacturers continue to put more and more pixels onto these tiny sensors.  The Canon 50D is no exception to this debate and has been criticized by many since it was first announced for simply having too many pixels.

So, is the Canon 50D a worth successor to the 40D?  Does Canon regain the edge over the Nikon D300 with more megapixels and greater sensitivity?  Is the 50D  a must-have camera?  Keep reading to find out my thoughts on Canon 50D and how it stacks up against the competition. [Read more…]

Canon 5D Mark II Review at Pro Photo Home

December 6, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Pro Photo Home has published a review of the Canon 5D Mark II‘s video capabilities with some very harsh words about the feature (like a “disaster”).

The point here is to review the video mode for the regular purchaser of the cam. They will most likely be disappointed in the video mode. I didn’t bother to mention how “fiddly” the whole operation is compared to a proper pro camcorder with zoom controls, a shoulder mount, etc., etc.

Sony A900 Review at Luminous Landscape

December 4, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Luminous Landscape has posted a review of the Sony A900.

For those without major lens commitments to other brands the Sony A900 offers tremendous value for the money. In almost every objective test criteria measured on DxOMark the A900 comes in in the top two or three, and in many categories does so against camera either costing twice as much or offering half the resolution.

I have few complaints about the Olympus FE-370. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, compact digital camera this one is well worth considering.

November 25, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Camera Labs has posted a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28.

Should you ultimately decide on the Panasonic FZ28 though, you won’t be disappointed. Like its predecessor it delivers a compelling array of features for the money and easily comes Highly Recommended.
