Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Lens for Canon DSLRs

September 14, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE Lens for Canon DSLRs

Carl Zeiss announced the Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZE lens for Canon DSLRs (EF-mount) today. Zeiss already produces an 18mm f/3.5 Distagon T* lens for Nikon F-mount and Pentax K-mount cameras.  Canon users should be pleased that Zeiss is continuing its comitment to the EF-mount.

The new ZE lens should be available Fall 2009 at an initial price of EUR 1049.00.  No official word on US prices yet; however, if it matches up with the existing Nikon and Pentax mounts, expect it to be around $1250 in the US.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

More details in the news release below. [Read more…]

Nikon D3000 Sample Images

September 13, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D3000

The D3000 is Nikon’s current low-end DSLR model.  It features a 10.2-megapixel DX-format CCD sensor, as found in the Nikon D60 that the D3000 replaces.  The updates are fairly subtle; however, it is clear after spending some time with it that Nikon is targeting a very entry-level crowd.

Expect more details in a full review coming soon.  For now, you can take a look at the below sample images from the D3000 and judge for yourself.  These images are from a production camera as shipped from Nikon.  Don’t expect any real differences from what we know the Nikon D60 could do though. Panasonic Lumix GF1 Announced

September 2, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Panasonic Lumix GF1

The Panasonic Lumix GF1 is a 12.1-megapixel Micro Four Thirds camera, which offers a more compact form factor than its predecessors, the G1 and GH1.  The new Lumix GF1 looks more like the Olympus E-P1; however the GF1 also offers a pop-up flash, a feature that I sorely missed on the Olympus E-P1.

The Panasonic Lumix GF1 should be available in October 2009 at an initial retail price of $899.95.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

More details in the news release below. [Read more…]

Canon 7D Announced

September 1, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon 7D

Today, Canon has announced the EOS 7D to add to its lineup of DSLRs. The Canon 7D is an 18-megapixel DSLR that adds several upgrades from prior generation prosumer DSLRs.

While the 18-megapixel APS-C (1.6x crop) CMOS sensor is an upgrade of 3-megapixels over the 50D, the Canon 7D is more akin to the pro-level 5D Mark II in terms of its features and build.  A new autofocus system consisting of 19 cross-type points will likely be welcomed by most shooters.  Additionally, Canon has addressed the cries of many aspiring filmmakers by including several frame rate options, including 1080p recording at 24fps.

The Canon 7D is likely to become known as the pro-level crop-sensor camera in Canon’s lineup.

The 7D should be available in September 2009 at an initial retail price of $1699 for body only and in a kit with Canon’s EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM at an initial retail price of $1899.

If you want one before Christmas, you should probably get in line by pre-ordering the 7D now so as to avoid the long wait-list that plagued the 5D Mark II’s arrival. [Read more…]
