GIMP 2.6 for Photographers – New Book

January 18, 2011 By Eric Reagan

GIMP 2.6 for Photographers is a new book from Klaus Goelker that guides beginning GIMP users through the open-source image editing software.  GIMP 2.6 is free, open-source software compatible with Windows, OS X and Linux.

GIMP is considered a rather powerful alternative to Photoshop; however, educational info on GIMP has sometimes been difficult to find.  This book “has evolved from classroom materials that the author developed and taught in courses and workshops on image editing with the GIMP.”  Conveniently, the book includes a software DVD that contains a full version of GIMP and other open-source photo programs for those with slower Internet connections.

GIMP 2.6 for Photographers carries a retail price of $39.95; however, it is currently available for $26.37 on Amazon.com.

December 21, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Artensoft has introduced its Photo Collage Maker 1.0 software that can automatically generate photo collages to create a mosaic photograph. In essence, you start with your own photo and then designate the types and number of tiles, along with other options.  Photo Collage Maker 1.0 then assembles your collage based on this info.

The software is Windows only, and comes pre-packaged with source image sets for designing your photo collage.  Photo Collage Maker 1.0 currently sales for $27.99.  A trial version is available for download.

You can read more about Photo Collage Maker 1.0 on Artensoft’s website.

Aperture Plug-Ins: Nik Viveza in the Wild

May 7, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Today, Nik Software released its Viveza plug-in out into the wild for Apple’s Aperture 2.1.  The Viveza plug-in is the first big step into localized image editing directly to RAW images.  Previously, users of programs like Aperture and Lightroom were forced to make full image edits in the RAW editor and then export a TIFF or other format to Photoshop for localized image edits.  Aperture 2.1 has allowed photographers to take RAW editing to this next level. Adobe Photoshop Express

March 27, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Adobe has released Photoshop Express in beta to the public. The above video that Scott Kelby placed on YouTube does a good job of explaining what it does and doesn’t do.  Additionally, here’s a brief description from Adobe:

During the public beta period, Adobe will solicit Photoshop Express user feedback on product features and functionality, which will continue to evolve over time. As the newest addition to the Photoshop family line, Photoshop Express has taken much of Adobe’s best image editing technology and made it simple and accessible to a new online audience. Photoshop Express allows users to store up to 2 gigabytes of images online for free, make edits to their photos, and share them online in creative ways, including downloading and uploading photos from popular social networking sites like Facebook.

Adobe Photoshop Express beta is available now for free via any Web browser at http://www.photoshop.com/express.
