August 1, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Sigma-24-70-f2-DG-OS-HSM

Remember when the rumors of the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens started to churn? There was a lot of disbelief.

Then, the lens launched and people wanted a full frame version of the lens… Well, it looks like Sigma may be answering those cries with a 24-70mm f/2 (again, I say “F/2”) lens. [Read more…]

Sony’s Making Lenses with Built-in Sensors for Smartphones?

July 19, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Sony Lens Unit for Smartphones

Want to take better photos with your smartphone? How about getting a better camera?

If this allegedly leaked image of a Sony lens attaching to a Xperia smartphone is the real deal, then that’s what Sony has in mind. Take a lens with a built-in sensor, battery, memory, etc. (basically a full-on camera packed into a lens) and make it mountable to your smartphone. Then, you use your camera app on your phone to control the “lens” and wirelessly transfer images to your phone’s camera roll. [Read more…]

Watch a Golfer Take Out a $80,000 Camera at the British Open Today

July 18, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Earlier today at the first round of the British Open, PGA pro Thomas Bjorn hit a ball out of the rough on the first hole and struck the camera that was capturing his swing.

Commentator Mike Tirico said the camera costs around $80,000. And while it appears to only be the lens that was damaged, those HD ENG zoom lenses generally cost a pretty penny themselves. [Read more…]

Watch Canon’s Image Stabilization Working from Inside the Lens

July 16, 2013 By Eric Reagan

[vimeo https://vimeo.com/25219345 w=640&h=360]

Anyone who has used a lens with image stabilization can easily recall the cool effect when looking through the viewfinder and press the shutter button halfway down. Those shaky shots suddenly become very stable – with almost a feeling that your lens is floating in some sort of fluid.

This short video shows the components inside of Canon’s 18-55mm IS lens operating with front element of the lens removed. As you can see, it’s a combination of springs and servos that deliver that fluid stabilization. I found myself watching this over and over.

Canon 45mm & 90mm Tilt-Shift Lenses Coming Soon? EF 28-300mm & 100-400mm L Lenses Too?

July 15, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon TS-E 45mm

Following up a previous rumor, there is more noise of a pair of new tilt-shift Canon lenses due in early 2014. The  current TS-E 45mm f/2.8 and TS-E 90mm F/2.8 are well-overdue replacement and should find similar updates as seen in the recent  Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L and TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lenses. We could see an announcement later in 2013, but rumors suggest that they won’t be available until 2014. [Read more…]
