Joby Gorillapod Magnetic: Memory Cards vs. Magnets

July 7, 2010 By Eric Reagan

A few weeks ago when I posted the review of the new Joby Gorillapod Magnetic, I had a few people express concerns about keeping the flexible, magnetic tripod in their camera bags – in close proximity to memory cards.

A couple of those questions came as comments on the review post, and a Joby rep responded in the comment thread with the following:

“As for the questions in the comments, as with all magnets, we don’t recommend prolong exposure. But there shouldn’t be a problem with the every day tossing of things into your bag.”

I thought that sounded like pretty good advice, as I had experienced no incidental issues with the magnets and memory cards.  However, I thought that this issue might be deserving of a little further testing. [Read more…]

People Behind the Gear: SanDisk CEO Eli Harari

June 30, 2010 By Eric Reagan

SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB CF Card

SanDisk is a universally-recognized brand in the digital imaging world.  No matter what brand of camera that you own, there’s a good chance that you’ve got a SanDisk memory card somewhere in your bag.

I had never heard the story behind SanDisk’s origins until I read this recent article on SanDisk CEO Eli Harari at USA Today.  Turns out, many years ago, he was ousted by the board of directors from a company he had founded.  From there, SanDisk was born.  Now, it’s a 3.6 billion dollar company.

Transcend 400x CF Cards

November 16, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Transcend 400x CF Cards

Transcend has introduced its latest line of speedy CF cards with a 400x speed rating.  The cards come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavors and are capable of theoretical transfer rates as up to 90MB/s read and 60MB/s write speeds.  The 400x label isn’t quite as speedy as we see in the latest SanDisk, Lexar and Photofast cards, but it’s still pretty darn quick and will require the latest UDMA mode 6 capable DSLRs to take full advantage of their speed.

Check availability on Amazon.com.

October 7, 2009 By Eric Reagan

I have been using a few memory cards from PhotoFast over the past few weeks alongside my usual mix of Lexar, Kingston and SanDisk cards. Specifically, the PhotoFast GMonster 533x 32GB and 533x Plus 16GB CF cards have spent a lot of time in my Canon 5D Mark II and a Nikon D300s that I’ve had on hand.  Additionally, I’ve tried out the PhotoFast 16GB Class 10 SD/SDHC card.
