HDSLR Gear That Saves the Day
I’ve been working on a short film project recently with my church (along with our in-house video director/my very good friend Nick, and some very talented volunteers). The short film is something we plan to use as part of our Easter morning service later this month. We’re shooting it entirely on the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D. We shot most of the scenes in one day at two locations (around 25 total set ups for a 16+ hour shooting day). Yesterday, we wrapped up with the intro scene, which calls for the lead character in a vehicle talking on a cell phone.
I thought I would share some of the random little tools that really saved the day and helped us get the shots (and audio) that were critical to this production. [Read more…]

The Joby Gorillapod Video is, as the name implies, a new Gorillapod for video cameras – mini-camcorders to be precise. The Gorillapod Video has a pan/tilt head with an arm for controlling camera angles and movement. It’s geared toward use with the likes of the Flip UltraHD, Kodak Zi8 and other lightweight camcorders.
The Gorillapod Video has powerful magnetic feet like those found on the Gorillapod Magnetic, which I love. The Gorillapod Video runs $29.99 and should be available soon at B&H Photo and Amazon.com.

Joby Gorillapod Magnetic: Memory Cards vs. Magnets
A few weeks ago when I posted the review of the new Joby Gorillapod Magnetic, I had a few people express concerns about keeping the flexible, magnetic tripod in their camera bags – in close proximity to memory cards.
A couple of those questions came as comments on the review post, and a Joby rep responded in the comment thread with the following:
“As for the questions in the comments, as with all magnets, we don’t recommend prolong exposure. But there shouldn’t be a problem with the every day tossing of things into your bag.”
I thought that sounded like pretty good advice, as I had experienced no incidental issues with the magnets and memory cards. However, I thought that this issue might be deserving of a little further testing. [Read more…]
Gorillapod Focus and Ballhead X Review: Bring Out the Big Guns
A little while back, I put a Canon 5D Mark II and a 70-200mm lens on a tiny little Gorillapod Magnetic – and it held the combo upside down using only magnets for grip. That was a little extreme for that little tripod though.
While Joby didn’t necessarily approve of that use (nor when I stuck my camera to a car), they must have felt sorry for me and my 5D Mark II because they sent me a heavy-duty Gorillapod Focus and Ballhead X to play with . . . and abuse a bit. [Read more…]
