In a recently published patent application, Samsung disclosed an invention that puts shallow depth-of-field capabilities into tiny, point and shoot cameras. Samsung gets there by using dual lenses in a single camera and using that second lens in a rather novel way. [Read more…]

Samsung NX Prototypes: Fun Form-Factors
Recently, Samsung gave us a look into the development of NX lenses and what the future might hold for the format of its mirrorless camera system. Along with that look, Samsung teased us with the above image that shows off several different designs of prototype NX-system cameras and lenses.
I’m not so sure about the ergonomics the Hassy-esqe design, but it sure has a nice retro look to it.
What do you think? What kind form-factor would be ideal for your shooting needs/wants?

Samsung NX20 and NX200 Coming Soon…
The Samsung NX10, which was supposed to be the start of Samsung’s plan to dominate the mirrorless camera market, was an ok camera. The updates to the NX system have been sparse – with the NX100 and its iFunction lenses adding a bit of “compact” option for mirrorless camera shoppers. And the iFunction was a surprisingly enjoyable feature to use.
Then the Samsung NX11 was announced. Then it was quietly delayed. Now, the US will only get a very limited release (if any). And, frankly, that’s just fine because the camera sat in an awkward not-a-real-upgrade category.
Instead of the NX11, it looks like the NX20 and NX200 will be released this Summer as proper replacements to the NX10 and NX100. According the the leaky rumor mill, they will feature sensors with even higher resolutions than the existing NX models’ 14.6MP sensors.
If Samsung wants to grab half of the mirrorless camera market, the NX20 and NX200 had better be pretty darn special because Panasonic, Sony and Olympus are off to a much stronger start…

Samsung NX11 Launch Delayed Until Mid-April . . . Probably
Just got word on the lingering Samsung NX11, which was announced in December 2010 with an anticipated release date of February 2011. After checking it out at CES 2011 and posting a hands-on review, I’ve been waiting and waiting for it to show up at B&H Photo, Adorama and Amazon.
But those retailers don’t even have a product listing for the camera yet – a bit odd for a camera that was supposed to be out last month. [Read more…]
