Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 Review at PhotographyBLOG

November 25, 2008 By Eric Reagan

PhotographyBLOG has posted a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1.

In terms of image quality, the Panasonic G1 also gets most things right. As you’d expect with the G1 using a regular Four Thirds sensor, the quality is very similar to other Four Thirds cameras that we’ve reviewed.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 Review at Digital Camera Review

November 25, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Digital Camera Review has published a review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700.

Hands down, the T700 is certainly the best looking, most solidly built small camera we’ve had the pleasure of shooting with this year.

The Great RED Hype . . . Again

November 25, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Over the past several months RED, has hyped up the second-coming of their big, bad cameras.  The latest big, bad camera announcement was for the over-priced Scarlet and EPIC DSMC (digital still and motion camera).

That wasn’t enough though.  RED is now hyping yet another announcement for December 3rd.

New announcement on Dec. 3rd. Everything has changed… just as we promised. :-)

Oh, and the “ground-breaking” Scarlet and EPIC cameras announced back on November 13th?  RED says, “The 13th was insignificant…”

Maybe it’s just more video mumbo-jumbo and nothing for us still photographers to be concerned with.  Or maybe, RED will enter the still image arena with a more reasonable price tag that actually means something to the overall market – and not just show off another high-priced modular system that doesn’t live up to the hype and purports to be available at some point in the future.

Canon 5D Mark II Video by Dan Chung

November 24, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Canon EOS5DmkII, One night in Beijing. from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

Here’s some more video from a 5D Mark II – this time a store-bought production model. Again, it’s very pretty video; however, the stutter in the panning has bothered me since the first video samples came out. Anybody else see this as a problem?

Details on the video:

Video filmed by Guardian photographer Dan Chung entirely on a production Canon EOS5DmkII and adapted Nikon and Zeiss lenses using manual focus. The camera was purchased to use solely as a video camera with existing Nikon kit.

The film was shot an edited in about twelve hours directly after picking the camera up from a Beijing camera store and charging the battery.

Lenses used are:
Nikon 17-35 f2.8
Nikon 80-200 f2.8
Nikon 85mm f2.8 shift lens
Nikon 16mm f2.8 fisheye

Zeiss/Contax 85mm f1.4

Panasonic Lumix FZ28 Review at Let’s Go Digital

November 23, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Let’s Go Digital has posted a review of the Panasonic Lumix FZ28.

The Panasonic DMC-FZ28 offers a solid and excellent image quality. The optical image stabilizer system enables shooting with relatively low ISO in order to considerably lessen the chance of image noise at 800 ISO and higher.

Nikon D400

November 23, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Rumors of a Nikon D400 have recently began to surface.  A couple of reputable sources, Thom Hogan and DPR forum user jeff-c, have alluded to a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony being placed in the D400. (via DPR)  While December 1 has been speculated as the announcement date for the past week or so, no confirmation has come yet.  jeff-c said that Nikon would announce a high-MP 135-size DSLR in about 45 days back around the end of October – so the first half of December looks pretty promising.

Thinking back to a little over a year ago, the announcement of a D400 makes more sense.  Recall that last Fall, Nikon announced the D3 and D300 together.  Both cameras were shockers and solid performers.  Imagine what a D4 (or D3x) and a D400 combo would be like – with the D4 at 24+ megapixels on an FX sensor and the D400 as a 16 megapixel DX DSLR.

Additionally, the D400, when announced, would almost certainly have the ability to capture HD video like its sibling D90.  In fact, I would expect the D400 video capabilities to be closer to that of the Canon 5D Mark II with audio-out capabilities and full 1080p capture.

And, while the timing is a little shorter than typically seen in Nikon’s DSLR cycle, the early (i.e., 12 mos. cycle) announcement of the 15 megapixel Canon 50D may force Nikon’s hand with the D400.

If the Nikon D400 isn’t announced in December 2008, you can almost bank on it for PMA 2009 though.

Stay tuned for the latest news and rumors on the Nikon D400.
