Canon’s Most Important Product Launch Ever?

September 10, 2009 By Eric Reagan

As if the Canon 7D wasn’t enough, Canon has apparently been dropping invites for “one of their biggest and most important product launches in its history.” It looks set to go down on September 29.

“In the autumn the Canon one of their biggest and most important product launches in the company’s history and we hope you can attend. During a lunch date you are welcome to listen to CEO Jouko Tuominen, Marketing and trend analyst Magnus Lindkvist, when they’re talking about

future trends and success factors in an increasingly digitalized everyday.

Date: 29 September

Time: Cl. 11-13

An invitation with more details coming soon. Welcome!

A picture of one, as I understand it, has created a large box with a red rag over. One side of the box looming, cardboard-colored, without pressure. Should mean something to professional direction. Hopefully not a new color laser …

Canon 1D Mark IV anyone?  Pro video gear?  The infamous Canikon (people still email me on this wanting more details)? A copier that makes perfect copies of Chuck Norris? Anyone?

Take your guess or offer your insider information in the comments below.  Closest to the actual product gets 40 kudos (that’s points, not candies).

Apple iPod nano with Built-in Video Camera

September 9, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Apple iPod nano with Built-in Video Camera

Apple’s new iPod nano includes a video camera and takes a direct shot across the bow of the Flip and other ultra-compact video cameras.  In fact, at Apple’s “It’s only rock and roll” event today, Apple showed an image of the 4GB Flip Ultra and mocked its $149 price tag.  The presentation went on with Steve Jobs at the helm touting Apple’s video option as 8GB for free.  What that really boils down to is that all the iPod nanos now include a video camera; however, you still have to buy the iPod nano to get the video camera (so it’s not really free Steve).  And, unfortunately, the iPod nano doesn’t offer the ability to capture still images.

The 8GB iPod nano runs $149, while the 16GB iPod nano comes in at $179.  Both versions offer the same video camera specs: [Read more…]

Leica M9

September 6, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Leica M9

The Leica M9 is set to be announced on Wednesday, September 9, 2009; however, a tipster sent a very official-looking brochure for the Leica M series (including the M9) to me today.  The Leica M9 brochure reveals that the new camera packs an 18-megapixel, full frame 24 x 36mm CCD sensor.

The new CCD sensor appears to be a totally redesigned sensor, which uses a special layout of micro lenses to assure “uniform exposure and extreme sharpness from corner to corner in every image.”  Additionally, the sensor is couple with a new filter to suppress infrared light; however, the a moiré filter was not included due to concerns of “image deterioration through loss of resolution” and the need to ensure maximum resolution of fine detail.  Sensitivity range covers ISO 80-2500.

Leica M9

As you can see from the images, the Leica M9 offers a 4-way switch and dial on the rear, along with a 2.5-inch LCD screen.

In an interesting move, the Lecia M9 is supplied with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as its RAW processing software.  Purchasers of the Leica M9 can download the software for free.  For its RAW format, the Leica M9 uses Adobe’s DNG standard.  Speaking with Leica representatives at PMA 2009 about the Lecia S2, I was told that this decision was a natural fit due to Leica’s in-house software development limitations.  Using a universal standard gives Leica the ability to focus on hardware.  The Leica M9 produces 16-bit DNG files for maximum quality.

No word on price yet; however, you shouldn’t expect to find the Leica M9 at a discount price in your local Best Buy anytime soon.  If you want all the details on this potential game-changer from Germany, get the complete specifications along with a couple of additional photos below. [Read more…]
