Ricoh Buys Pentax

Hoya has announced that it will be selling Pentax’s camera business to Ricoh.  The deal should take effect on October 1, 2011 and is reported to be a $124 million selling price.

Interestingly, Ricoh has a history with the Pentax K-mount.  My first SLR was a Ricoh KR-Super II (shown above), which is a K-mount camera that was basically a Pentax K1000 knockoff.  Who knew that a couple of decades later Ricoh would acquire the K-mount system for its own? [Read more…]

Sanyo Releases XX Rechargeable Batteries for Photographers

Olympus E-P3 Available for Pre-Order

The newly announced Olympus E-P3 is available for pre-order at B&H, which usually means (at B&H anyway) that it will be in stock and ready to ship soon.

Sigma 150mm F2.8 EX DG Macro Now Available

Sigma’s new 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens is now available.  While Sigma’s listed retail price of the lens is $1400, street prices are closer to the $1100 range.  You can find it at B&H Photo.

Olympus E-PM1, E-PL3 and E-P3 Unveiled

Olympus has opened up its Micro Four Thirds line of cameras to three new cameras.  The Olympus E-PM1, E-PL3 and E-P3 (shown above) essentially make up the small, medium and large categories for the series.  Of course, “large” is a relative term with respect to the Olympus Micro Four Thirds line as a whole.

Magic Bullet Suite 11 Released

Red Giant Software has released Magic Bullet Suite 11, which includes a total of 9 Magic Bullet products, such as Looks, Colorista II and Grinder.

Nikon D4 and D400 Due Next Month

In what could be the biggest camera launch of the year, one of Nikon Rumors’ sources has tipped the launch of the Nikon D4 and D400 for August.

Given the coming Sony A77 with a 24MP sensor, it is most likely that the D400 will sport the same 24MP APS-C sensor but labeled with the ubiquitous “Developed by Nikon” asterisk seen in recent Nikon pro-DSLR specs.  The D400 will almost certainly feature 1080p video to follow the recent trend of Nikon DSLRs.  Hopefully, the D400 will avoid the cumbersome aperture adjustment problem that made the Nikon D7000 more frustrating for video capture.
