GoPro Killer? New Sony Action Cams Shoot 720p HD Video at 120fps

August 29, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Sony Action Cam

The new Sony HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15 are new Action Cams aimed at the GoPro crowd.  The compact cameras shoot 1080p HD video 30fps; however, they also have the ability to capture 720p HD video at either 30fps, 60fps or even 120fps for some great slow motion effects in a very compact package.

The cameras sport a 16MP Exmor R CMOS image sensor and record to either Memory Stick Micro or Micro SDHC cards.

The cameras weight 3 ounces with battery and ship with adhesive mounts and a ruggedized waterproof case that includes a tripod mount.  While in the case, the camera is waterproof down to 197 feet and can withstand 5-foot drops.

The cameras also include Sony’s SteadyShot image stabilization, which is something that these POV-style cameras desperately need.  The glass on the front of the camera is an ultra-wide 170-degree Carl Zeiss Tessar lens.

The AS15 model adds WiFi that works with Sony’s new PlayMemories Mobile application for sharing video and controlling the camera from smartphones.

Sony also plans to offer mounting kits for water sports, headband, bikes and suction cups.

The Sony HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15 Action Cams will be available in September 2012 for $199.99 and $269.99, respectively.  You can find them here at B&H Photo:  Sony HDR-AS10 and Sony HDR-AS15.

TBH i was hoping for a little more.

Was 1080p60 not possible? I know people will say that would be overkill but these action cams need all the frames they can get. Yes 120fps at 720p is cool, that is why i thought 1080p60 could be done.

Wonder what F-Stop the lens is? You would think if it was something to be proud of they would advertise it.

And this was probably asking to much but i really wanted it to come with Sony’s new and AMAZING ‘balanced image stabilization’:

But then if they did all that how would they sell the HDR-AS20?

I’m still hoping for something special from the GoPro Hero 3, new Contour and JVC Adixxion.

I think this looks really cool but no idea about its quality:

Actually what i would love is a helmet mount for the Canon EOS C500 = 4k at 120fps!!

What is with the massively overkill 16MP Exmor R CMOS image sensor?

If you ask people i am pretty sure people just want the best quality video, they probably take photos pretty rarely and when they do would you not want something optically better?

16MP is ridiculous, for 1080 you need 2.1MP, you might want a little extra for digital image stabilisation but anything else just means you are using tiny pixels so poor low light and compromised dynamic range. Even if they are oversampling its still stupid to have what is probably a 1/2.8″ sensor but only have about 1/20″ of usable sensor!

Just got HDRAS15, very compact, but also very fragile out of waterproof case.Camera lens is very easy to get fingerprints on and will be very easy to scratch (waterproof housing also suffers from high scratch potential).

Biggest issues are that WiFi connection to Smartphone (Sony Playmemories mobile) does not work very well. Will not connect to Samsung GS3, or many other Android phones (see comments posted on app). It does however connect to old Motorola Xoom tablet. Also mounting options are very limited, even after Sony release after market mounts (which are not available in Australia yet).

Video quality is quite good however.

Eventually Sony may put out a good version of this, but like most things, avoid the first model :-)

    Better option is the Contour+2

Is the lens actually made of glass? The Hero 2 uses real glass.
