No WiFi would be… Idk flabbergasting. I shoot teathered a lot but real clincher is I want to send at least jpegs to my phone & tablet quickly & easily. Really makes me want to curse at someone over at canon. I’ve been waiting on the mark II for years which makes it even worse. Its inexcusable & in my opinion a blatant disregard for customers. Flat out a way to scam more money from us loyal consumers.
What’s our choice? Add a limited function WiFi card or buy add on WiFi gear? Even if external WiFi unit was free its still added bulk & yet another battery. Grumble grumble grumble.

I have a feeling my next DSLR or camera body is not going to be Canon. Love their lenses and optics, but prices are insane and features are limited. Feel generation or two behind with new products… Except 70d when it was released. That’s why I bought it. Expected the 7D2 to be that AND MORE. It’s a far cry from even an upgraded 70D at this point. Hope there will be a magical feature or spec that hasn’t been leaked yet, or maybe a variation like 7D2C? One can only hope, but it’s likely not happening.

If this is it, what’s missing for you?
I feel like the spec list is about right, particularly for still image. The measuring stick on the still image side is going to be image quality. If it’s at the level of the 70D, then that’s not enough, in my opinion. If it’s on par with (or at least close to) the 5D Mark II (not the Mk3), then I would be giddy over this camera…
I’m ready to see a breakout APS-C camera from Canon.

Just some of the list…
Built in wifi with improved app and “experience” vs what 70D currently offers. A GoPro style app with that type of performance would be awesome, but that’s expecting too much from Canon.
Touch screen with tilt or full flip out. Get that with weather sealing this isn’t “easy” but the tech exists to submerge a phone in water for several hours – be an industry leader and make it happen at this price range. If the user doesn’t want this feature, leave screen flipped open all the time. High angle and low angle shooting is so much easier with flip out screen – doubt I’ll go back.
Greatly improved or enhanced video features over 70D – just adding a 60p option isn’t enough anymore. If this can’t do 2.5K or 4K at least offer a slow motion burst mode for video at 120 fps or 180fps at a 10 or 15 second duration. Give SOMETHING to seperate this from the crowd for video.
Greatly reducing noise in low light/high ISO mode – this “new” sensor might do it, but I’m doubtful.
Looking at the specs, I’m glad I snagged the 70D when I did. It’s a great camera and will at worst give me time to consider another brand moving forward.
Eric Reagan says
Thanks for the response Brian.
I’m with you on the WiFi connectivity experience. Surely someone can do this right. This is an area where we need a breakthrough in user experience. I’d love to see Canon make that happen, but like you, I don’t expect that kind of progressive development from “play it safe” Canon.
I’m more lenient on the other points except for image quality and noise performance.
I get that people want 4K from a Canon camera at a reasonable price. I’m one of those people who has asked for that. I almost roll my eyes at expecting a 4K and/or 120fps camera from Canon that is within reach of the consumer/enthusiast market. Is it really too much to ask for my $2000 HDSLR to match the video capability of my $200 iPhone (120fps), or my $300 Galaxy Note (4K)?
Point-and-shoot and bridge cameras are getting 4K and high frame rates now. And that trend is only going to continue. Why Canon continues to play old school on product development, I dunno? Enthusiast market share will continue to dwindle as they play this game. You are a case in point.
All that said, I think the ‘still’ photography crowd is a much larger market for DSLR sales than the cinematography crowd. Serious cinematographers (including enthusiasts) are moving toward the affordable cinema cameras.
If Canon were to bust out the 7D Mark II with impeccable image quality, I think sales would back that up.
If the step in image quality is marginal, as it was from the 60D to 70D, then I think the 7D Mark II will still sell fine, but not up to its potential.
It’s a more crowded market at the enthusiast DSLR level than it ever has been. And, I agree that now is not the time to play it safe with the next big release.

I work mainly in motion graphics and video post-production. Have worked with everything from DV footage and low-res Flip cams to Arri and RED. When I do shoot video on my own, it’s mainly interviews and corporate style work. When time allows, I rent gear… but that’s not becoming as easy these days with lots of poorly timed and planned shoots – run and gun, last minute style stuff. I’m likely going to be going with an FS7 at some point, but I’ll need a complementing 2nd/3rd camera for interview setups. GH4 for the price is about it, but low light isn’t great. Blackmagic is an option, but again, the low light performance is terrible and the workflow isn’t exactly the quickest thing to turn around when shooting any type of RAW variety. I’m looking for something better than the existing options in terms of image quality and performance. I’ll adapt everything else like I have with 5DMk2’s and 3’s, 70Ds, and even a T4i/T5i on occasion (external audio, no timecode, etc).
And I agree – my iPhone shouldn’t be the “go to” option over a DSLR. Give me a reason to reach into my bag and pull out a Canon product, or else why am I going to buy?
And these comments were initially speculation… if these specs change, then great. But there has been no indication so far that it will be the case.
Brian says
Just received the note from B&H announcing the 7D2… the best feature that was not announced previously is uncompressed out video recording via external recorder. So this SHOULD mean it can output on the internal monitor as well as an external when connected via HDMI – something only the 5DMk3 was capable of doing in the DSLR class. Only other thing that stood out was USB3, which I guess makes sense since there’s no WIFI and an external module would be needed.
This is an upgrade from the 7D for sure, but not a Canon breakthrough. Close to the 70D, but swapped features?
Stephen Cupp says
So now we are condemning a company based on what a rumor. Can we at least wait for the official announcement before we burn them at the stake?

BTW. Screen should also be touch. Don’t get me wrong keep all the existing hard buttons but dang for menu browsing, focusing options & even while reviewing pictures zooming by pinch or tap and moving is a huge time saver.
Not feeling flagship status here that I was so expecting.
I feel the urg to flip a table in frustration.
