Those of you in or around NYC this weekend should take the time to check out Levi’s Photo Workshop.  On Sunday, November 7, they’re kicking off a week-long celebration of sports through the lens of photography.

Sunday night, Steve Little and Efren Ramirez, stars of Eastbound & Downtown, will join in the celebration and introduce the season finale of the show with a special live screening.

If you aren’t familiar with the Levi’s Photo Workshop yet…

“The Levi’s® Photo Workshop is a temporary public facility that features a professional-grade production studio, vintage camera rental, digital design stations, exciting printing equipment, and a shop full of bits and bobs to keep you shooting in style. Although there are some important local pioneers collaborating here, these resources are really for everyone.” –Levi’s

Levi’s Photo Workshop is at 18 Wooster Street between Canal and Grand.

Check out the full details on the We Are All Fanatics Exhibition below. [Read more…]

Panasonic GF2 Announced

November 4, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Panasonic GF2 is a follow-up to the popular Panasonic GF1.  The GF2 packs a 12.1MP Live MOS sensor, shoots Full HD at 1920 x 1080 at 60i in AVCHD format, and covers a sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400. The new camera also adds a touch-sensitive 3″ LCD at 460k-dot resolution and a built-in stereo mic.

Like the GF1, the GF2 includes a pop-up flash, along with a hotshoe for an external flash.  The GF2 is available as a kit with either a 14mm f/2.5 or 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

The GF2 will be available in red, black and white, and is expected to ship in January 2011. We should know the retail price next month (expect it to be in the $800-$1000 range depending on the lens).  Check availability on Amazon.com.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

Photos as Web Content: Eyetracking Study

November 3, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Jakob Nielsen’s recent eyetracking study examines the effectiveness of different types of photos on websites.

The main conclusion to be drawn from the study is that photos inserted into websites for filler are essentially ignored, while photos that provide relevant information can be very engaging to viewers.

Nielsen’s commentary on this eyetracking study primarily addresses the website developer crowd; however, it also serves as a reminder that making your photography relevant is important.  When approaching a job, are you considering the end use and whether your images are created to be relevant and informative alongside other content?

Panasonic GF2 Coming Tomorrow

November 3, 2010 By Eric Reagan

One of my favorite mirrorless cameras is the Panasonic GF1.  In terms of form-factor, controls and image quality, the GF1 delivers a great balance.

If 43rumors.com is accurate with its prediction, we should see the successor to the GF1 tomorrow.  It’s looking like the GF2 will have the same 12MP sensor as is found in the Panasonic G2, which is a solid performer.

If the Panasonic GF2 turns out to deliver better performance, while maintaining the friendly form-factor of the GF1, then we should have a real gem on our hands.

Stay tuned for the latest on the Panasonic GF2.

Update:  It’s already leaked in France.  Here’s proof:

Upgrading Your Used Cameras and Lenses

November 3, 2010 By Eric Reagan

If you’re really lusting after that new Nikon D7000 or Canon 60D, and you’re coming up short on cash to make the move, consider upgrading your current gear toward the purchase of the latest and greatest.

One of Photography Bay’s affiliates, Adorama, asked me to remind those of you who might be interested that they will buy your used photo and video gear for cash or trade.

Here’s how Adorama’s deal works:

“If you are ready to upgrade your system, or you have equipment that you would like to turn into cash, send us the equipment to have it evaluated and we will give you an honest and fair offer. If you accept the offer, we will send you a check right away or you can use it as a credit toward any purchase you would like to make.

If a deal is not made, we will return the merchandise to you, fully insured, at our expense.” –Adorama
