Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150 Review at PhotographyBLOG

January 17, 2009 By Eric Reagan

PhotographyBLOG has published a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150.

We’d even go so far as to suggest this has to be one of the best options for the more discerning photographer who doesn’t want to kart around a DSLR or a more compact bridge camera on nights out or the occasional day trip.

Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM

January 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Today, Sigma announced a new super-range zoom lens, the 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM.  The new Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM will be available in March 2009 in Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony and Sigma mounts.

The combination of optical stabilization (OSM) and the hypersonic motor (HSM) makes this lens very attractive as a consumer-level all purpose lens.  In my opinion, Canon really botched the opportunity to make solid super-zoom lens with its new EF-S 18-200mm IS lens by failing to put a USM motor inside it, which has resulted in a slower and noiser autofocus.  If the price is right, perhaps this Sigma 18-250mm lens can fill that void with a fast focus speed and optical stabilization.

Canon PowerShot A480

January 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Canon has replaced its PowerShot A470 with the new PowerShot A480.  The A480 features a 10 megapixel sensor and 3.3x optical zoom.  It is situated as a lower-end consumer grade point and shoot camera that’s no frills and comes with a reasonable price. No word on US price yet, but the A470 that is replaces is $81.95 at Amazon.com right now, and it came to market at $99.95 I believe.

It has no image stabilization and comes with the standard bells and whistles like face detection autofocus.  The A480 is powered by AA batteries (a good thing in my opinion).

See the following press release for more details. [Read more…]

Canon 5D Mark II is Official Camera of the President

January 15, 2009 By Eric Reagan

For the first time, the official photo of the President of the United States was taken with a digital camera . . . the Canon EOS 5D Mark II to be exact.  Pete Souza, the new White House photographer, is a Canon shooter.  Previously, he shot with the 5D.  Since being named the “First Photographer”, however, he picked up the 5D Mark II.  More details at Change.gov.

I found this rather ironic while working on my 5D Mark II review today that I came across this news.  I’ll have the review out next week I hope.  However, if it’s good enough for the President, it’s probably good enough for you too.

For now, stay tuned to Photography Bay’s Canon 5D Mark II Reviews and Resources for the latest.

Ray Flash from ExpoImaging Gets Cheaper

January 13, 2009 By Eric Reagan

ExpoImaging recently dropped the price of its $300 Ray Flash to $200. It’s a pretty cool device if you haven’t seen it before (although I have yet to get my hands on one). Basically, it attaches to your on-camera flash and allows to you keep both hands on your camera and lens while you get the benefit of a lightweight ring flash. The Ray Flash is supposed to be pretty efficient with the light from your on-camera flash, so you don’t lose as much light as I do with my DIY Ring Flash.

David Hobby over at Strobist is pretty impressed with it, and so is Scott Kelby.   Although, it’s gotten some mixed reviews among purchasers over at B&H Photo.

Check out the press release below for further details. [Read more…]

Nikon D3x Review at Tech Radar

January 13, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Tech Radar has posted a review of the Nikon D3x.

Like the Sony Alpha 900, the incredibly high resolution of the D3x delivers files of an extraordinary quality, both in and out of the studio, between ISO 100-400.

Nikon D65 Rumor

January 13, 2009 By Eric Reagan

You can bet that Nikon will be refreshing the D60 line soon.  Will the new camera be called the Nikon D65?  I don’t know; however, Nikon Rumors got some info from an unknown source on a possible D65 with the following specs:

  • 12mp CMOS
  • 3fps
  • 9 AF-points CAM 850, 1 Cross type
  • 720p video
  • Live view
  • Dust reduction
  • PMA 2009 release

[source]

Frankly, I think anyone could take a guess at those features and end up being pretty close to the real thing.  Consider this a blanket rumor for now.  I’ll keep you posted if any firms up on the Nikon D65.

Stay tuned to Photography Bay’s PMA 2009 Preview for the latest news and rumors as we get closer to PMA 2009.
