Canon 7D Mark III Rumors Continue

September 29, 2017 By Eric Reagan

Canon will, of course, unveil a new addition to the popular 7D product line – likely to be called the Canon 7D Mark III. The most recent timeline suggests this will happen in 2018.

As we inch closer toward an actual release date, we’ll surely hear more and more rumors about such a camera. Today, we have a rumored (if somewhat suspect) list of key specifications for the upcoming 7D Mark III. Check it out below. [Read more…]

Canon’s Developing a Low-Light, Compact Industrial Camera

September 14, 2017 By Eric Reagan

Canon has announced the development of MM100-WS Multi-Purpose Camera. It’s incredibly compact with a body size of approximately 1.57 in (w) x 1.57 in (h) x .85 in (d), which is about the same size as the GoPro HERO5 Session. The Canon camera is even a little thinner though.

Canon is positioning the MM100-WS as a solution for a variety of industries. It suggests professional and industrial applications, such as monitoring in narrow spaces, piping inspections and automotive industry, among others. It will be dust and moisture resistant and can capture images in very low light, considering it only needs 1 lux of illumination.

No word yet on pricing or availability; however, I expect to see the camera up close at PhotoPlus next month.

Canon 6D Mark II Review at DP Review

August 10, 2017 By Eric Reagan

DP Review has published its in-depth review of the new Canon 6D Mark II. It praises the camera for its high image quality capability; however, it finds that the 6D Mark II falls well short of the competition:

The only thing that makes the EOS 6D II stand out is Dual Pixel AF, which turns out is only of real value in this camera when shooting single shots of slow-moving subjects or HD video.

I still want to give the camera a go myself but the dynamic range results are incredibly dissapointing to me. I just expected more out of this camera, which seems to echo DP Review’s sentiments in its review. You can read the full review here at DP Review.

August 3, 2017 By Eric Reagan

I came across the Canon EF Lens Work III book the other day and couldn’t resist adding it to my library. As a Canon shooter, it’s fun to look back at the history of the Canon SLR line going back to the 1930s. [Read more…]

The Canon 6D Mark II May Not Be the Camera We Were Hoping For

July 21, 2017 By Eric Reagan

I was pretty pumped with the Canon 6D Mark II was announced. It wasn’t announced with a lot of fanfare for its video quality and there was no 4K video under the hood. However, it looked like THE full frame camera to have if you were a serious photographer on a budget. Unfortunately, early tests are starting to show that the dynamic range is rather lackluster for a full frame camera in 2017. Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon Log Gamma Now Available

July 13, 2017 By Eric Reagan

The Canon 5D Mark IV is now available with the Canon Log Gamma upgrade pre-loaded. We saw this back at NAB and knew it was coming soon. Now, it’s here.

Canon Log Gamma gives you “flat images with an improved dynamic range of 800%, or 12 stops. This function makes it easier to match cameras in post-production as well as provides the most latitude and potential for color grading. For monitoring, a View Assist function is available, which allows the use of one of two LUTs for more accurate viewing on the camera’s LCD or an external monitor. The options are for Canon Log 10 to Wide DR that converts the footage to Wide Dynamic Range Gamma or Canon Log 10 to ITU-R BT.709, which converts the image to a more conventional Rec. 709 color space.”

If you want the Canon Log upgrade on an exisiting 5D Mark IV, you’ll have to send your camera in to Canon to receive the update and pay $100 for it. Otherwise, it is available as an option when you order, at a $100 premium over the standard retail version. Check it out here at B&H Photo.

Canon EOS C100 & C300 Deals

July 5, 2017 By Eric Reagan

A couple Canon EOS Cinema cameras received further discounts with some relatively reasonable prices now. The original Canon EOS C100 is now available for $2,299 (was $3,999), while the C100 with the Dual Pixel AF update is $2499 (was $4,499). The C100 Mark II with the EF-S 18-135mm IS STM lens is $3,699 (reg. $5,699). Finally, the C300 Mark II is available for $9,999 (reg. $15,999) – perhaps in response to the recently announced Panasonic AU-EVA1, which ships later this year. I’m not sure if these are permanent price drops or if they are only for a short while. If you’ve been on the hunt for a cinema camera though, these are are the most attractive deals Canon has offered thus far.
