JVC presented a concept 4K2K “consumer” camcorder at CES 2011. Just looking at the camera though, I have a tough time classifying it as a consumer model. And while JVC was mum on a target price point, $2000 is about what I would put at the top-end of the consumer price range, which would seem to be a little low for a camera of this caliber. Kingston has announced the UHS-I UltimateXX SDHC memory card. As you may recall, UHS-I is a new standard introduced by the SD Association. The new Kingston UltimateXX card offers up to 60MB/sec. read and 35MB/sec. write speeds.
The UltimateXX product line comes in capacities of 8GB, 16GB and 32GB priced at $69.99, $179.99 and $349.99, respectively.

Lexar has announced new Lexar Professional 133x SDXC cards in 128GB and 64GB flavors. The new cards offer a transfer speed of 20MB per second. The new 64GB and 128GB cards will be available in the first quarter of this year at initial retail prices of $399.99 and $699.99, respectively.

Remember when the first RED EPIC that shipped out to a customer a couple weeks ago?
Well, it was stolen.
Someone broke into Mark Pederson’s chalet while he was vacationing in France and stole the only EPIC-M that’s gone out the door to a customer. Jim Jannard is offering $100,000 to the camera’s safe return and the conviction of the thieves. [Read more…]

In still image files shot with the Canon 7D and other DSLRs, we have the luxury of using RAW format to capture each frame and get a tremendous amount of latitude (exposure and color range in over/under-exposed shots) out of those files in post production. Unfortunately, when it comes to video capture, DSLRs like the Canon 7D spit out a highly compressed file that has nowhere near the amount of latitude you get from a RAW still image file.
While the below video comparison may seem silly in some respects for comparing a $1500 camera to a $65,000+ (depending on the configuration) camera, it is also very useful to those new to HDSLR video – as a way to demonstrate (1) just how limited these cameras are when it comes to capturing video, and (2) just how much more important a perfect exposure is when recording video.
