Manfrotto 700RC2 Fluid Video Head Review

September 26, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Manfrotto 700RC2 is a basic, fluid head head for use with video cameras up to 5.5 pounds.  At around $90 street price, this is an entry-level head with little in the way of creature comforts.

The 700RC2 still gives you a quick release plate, and it has a pan arm rosette on the right side of the head for adjusting the angle of the solid pan arm included with the head.  The 700RC2 also has separate pan and tilt friction locks.

New Manfrotto Products at Photokina

September 25, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Manfrotto busted out several new products and product lines earlier this week at Photokina 2010. The new products fit neatly into Manfrotto’s new “brand evolution” with its Imagine More slogan.

The bread and butter Manfrotto products fall into the broad photo support category and, from there, Manfrotto has subdivided 4 product families based on the type of photographer – professional, advanced amateur, amateur and social recorders. [Read more…]

Gorillapod Video

September 22, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Joby Gorillapod Video is, as the name implies, a new Gorillapod for video cameras – mini-camcorders to be precise.  The Gorillapod Video has a pan/tilt head with an arm for controlling camera angles and movement.  It’s geared toward use with the likes of the Flip UltraHD, Kodak Zi8 and other lightweight camcorders.

The Gorillapod Video has powerful magnetic feet like those found on the Gorillapod Magnetic, which I love.  The Gorillapod Video runs $29.99 and should be available soon at B&H Photo and Amazon.com.

More details in the press release below. [Read more…]

iPhone Meets Canon SLR

September 6, 2010 By Eric Reagan

iPhone Canon SLR

There may not be a practical point to make with this contraption, but it still has a certain novelty factor to it.  One industrious (or maybe bored) iPhone owner, who apparently had an old Canon SLR lying around, decided to gut his SLR to make room for an iPhone mounted on the rear.

The result?

Well, you’ll have to see the video that shows off the Frankencamera below. [Read more…]

Zacuto Quick Draw DSLR Rig Review

August 30, 2010 By Eric Reagan

The Zacuto Quick Draw is basically a trimmed-down version of the Zacuto Striker (without the shoulder stock), and actually I don’t even know that you can pick up the Quick Draw as a standalone product anymore.  Nevertheless, Zacuto prices have dropped, and the Striker kit is even in a relatively reasonable price range now.

As far as simple, low-key DSLR support goes, I’m a big fan of the Quick Draw.  I didn’t really think that would be the case going into my use of this rig since it didn’t include a shoulder support.  However, after getting used to the kit with my 5D Mark II, I was very pleased with the flexibility of the Quick Draw.
