August 24, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Olympus's Micro 4/3rd's camera

School will be starting again and you’re going to be taking that digital photography or photojournalism class you always wanted to (or just to get rid of credits.) If it’s a good program, your teacher is going to tell you to go out and buy a manual camera of some sort. Despite the fact that you’re most likely going to sell back those textbooks, it will probably be a good investment for you to get a great camera now. Here’s a list of cameras that you may want to get your hands on that may potentially stick with you for the long run.

How to Use Fill-Flash in Macro Photography

August 3, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Virginia Buttonweed (Diodia Virginiana)

The following post on the use of fill-flash in macro photography was written by professional photographer Ron Kruger. Learn more about Ron at the end of this post.

I’m an outdoor writer/photographer, and I’ve always admired those  minuscule blossoms I see around my blinds and hides and along rivers and  streams. This past spring, sort of as a sideline, or hobby with the hope of some potential profit, I embarked on a mission to record macro images of  every tiny wildflower I could find.

As a professional, I’m always looking for ways to do things differently  than the average photographer. One I’d like to share is fill-flash for  macro, which we called flash-fill back in the day when you had to make all  kinds of complicated readings and calculations to pull it off.  I’m not talking about a dedicated macro ring flash, either, but your  common, everyday external flash unit and/or your on-camera flash. Both work, and they work great together. [Read more…]

July 23, 2009 By Eric Reagan

In the above short film, you see the effect of the Snooricam in action, along with a Nikon D90 attached on the long end.

The Snorricam, named after Einar Snorri and Eiour Snorri,or the “Snorri Brothers”, is a body mount for a camera which is used to create an interesting point of view, which can be seen in such movies as I Am Legend, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Hangover.

How to Enjoy Photography When Your Hands Shake

July 22, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Blurry Branches by flakeparadigm

Imagine if every time you picked up a camera, it started shaking.  It didn’t shake at any other time, just when you touch it – because your hands shake, severely.

That’s pretty much Paul’s circumstances. [Read more…]

July 20, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The following post comes from Allon Bloch, the CEO of Wix.com, which is a web publishing platform with free and premium offerings.  While some of Allon’s are a pitch for Wix.com’s service, I think that they can still apply to many services and platforms beyond Wix.  Learn more about Allon and Wix, as well as some additional thoughts on these tips from me at the end of this post.

7 Photos That Show Motion By Stopping It

July 19, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Take the plunge by The artist (formerly) known as Gene

Shot with a Canon EOS 30D at 1/250th of second.

Last week, I touched on using motion blur to give a sense of speed and movement in a photo.  This week, we’re going to look at some examples where no motion blur (or very little) is present; however, these images still manage to effectively convey a sense of motion.

In each image, there is some element that helps convey motion.  In some images, it may be the primary subject that should be moving.  In others, it may be an element surrounding the subject – such as water.  By freezing what should be moving, these images give your mind a moment that you know and can sense requires motion. When is a Point & Shoot Camera Enough?

July 10, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The following post is by avid portrait photographer, Alan Morris, who shares his thoughts on if and when a point and shoot camera will do just fine. Learn more about Alan at the end of this post.

You don’t always need a DSLR to get good photographs. I own and love my Nikon D700 and D200 and use them for all types of event and wedding photography. The image quality is outstanding. However, when I am traveling or don’t need the high performance of these cameras, I usually use a Canon G9 or Fuji F200EXR. The Canon takes great images and The Fuji fits easily in my pocket. 8 Great Tips to Get More Out of Your Camera Batteries

July 7, 2009 By Chris Gampat

Olympus's Micro 4/3rd's camera

Wouldn’t it be an absolute nightmare to have your batteries die in the middle of an important shoot? Granted, we’re all responsible people that take great care to ensure that something like that doesn’t happen when we’re out on the job. However, after shooting with different systems one can easily see that the battery life of cameras from different companies can vary. Being in the tech industry, I’ve learned tips for conserving battery power and extending overall life. At the beginning of the year, I’ve started applying those tips to cameras: with amazingly positive results. Here are 8 pointers to keep in mind no matter what type of camera you shoot with.
