2 New Nikon Mirrorless Cameras Due at CES 2013

December 23, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon continues to push its 1 Series mirrorless system, and it looks like CES 2013 will be busy with a pair of new 1 Series camera – the Nikon 1 J3 and Nikon 1 S1.

According to Nikon Rumors, the Nikon 1 J3 will sport a 14MP sensor and otherwise be a slight bump in specs over the recently announced Nikon 1 J2. Additionally, the Nikon 1 S1 appears to be a new entry-level 1 Series model that sports a 10MP image sensor. This will place the J-series as a mid-level model and the V-series will remain the high-end model in the lineup, which is currently filled by the Nikon 1 V2.

December 18, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon has filed a patent that makes way for a digital back to convert 35mm film SLRs into the full-fledged DSLRs. The rear door that covers the film holder would be removed and replaced with a digital back equipped with an image sensor.

An excerpt from the patent:

The camera back exchange type camera which images the object image acquired by the photographing optical system by the side of a camera body, and obtains electronic image data is known by replacing with the rear lid with which the camera body was equipped, and equipping a camera body with the camera back having an image sensor.

In the camera back of the description to this Patent document 1, when the moving mechanism to which the position of an image sensor is moved, and the position detection sensor which detects the position of an image sensor are provided and a moving mechanism moves an image sensor based on the output of a position detection sensor, The image sensor to the photographing optical system by the side of a camera body is positioned.

Nikon D400, D8000 and D4x Rumors for 2013

November 29, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon Rumors has a great roundup about their thoughts, tips and suspicions surrounding what new Nikon gear should realistically be appearing in 2013.

The biggest rumor for most shooters is the fusion of the D300s and D7000 lines. NR expects to see a Nikon D400 or D8000 that servers as a successor to both lines with the Nikon D3200 and D5200 rounding out the low-end consumer market. Personally, I think this makes a lot of sense now that there is a higher-end amateur camera with the Nikon D600 that’s just a little bit above the D300s price range (based on the launch retail price). Accordingly, a D400 or D8000 model could now slot easily between the D300s and D7000 to answer the prosumer sports and wildlife call with its APS-C sensor.

Additionally, NR expects a higher resolution full frame model (the D4x?) toward the end of 2013 that would likely be situated above the D4, and would use a 36MP or 52MP sensor. A show of hands for who needs 52MP please?

Nikon D5200 Not Coming to the US Until 2013

November 7, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D5200

The Nikon D5200 was announced yesterday throughout Europe, Asia and Australia; however, Nikon USA has remained silent.  It now appears that Nikon USA will not announce the D5200 until CES 2013 in January, which will give Nikon a shiny new DSLR to show off at the massive consumer trade show.

Accordingly, those of you hoping to get your hands on the D5200 in time for the holidays will just have to wait a little longer.  In the mean time, there’s sure to be some killer deals on the Nikon D5100 as it nears its end-of-life.
