Kingston Unveils SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 Cards for 4K Video Capture

February 6, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Kingston SDXC UHS-I U3 64GB Memory Card

To go along with the new Panasonic GH4 4K camera that will be announced later tonight / early tomorrow, Kingston is first out of the gate with its official announcement of a new SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 card in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities. The new Speed Class 3 card guarantees minimun write speeds of 30MB/s.

The minimum write speed of these cards translates to roughly 240Mbps, which fits well within the max on-board data rate of the Panasonic GH4’s 4K capture at 100Mbps for its IPB .mov/.mp4 4K capture and 200Mbps for its ALL-Intra .mov and .mp4 HD capture. Additionally, the new Kingston card provides max speeds of 90MB/s read and 80MB/s write.

Pricing isn’t all that bad either, considering the performance they offer. The 16GB cards run around $40 street and the 64GB cards are around $105 street. Check them out here on Amazon.com.

Canon Passes 70 Million EOS Cameras Produced, Confirms Vast Majority of Lenses Sold are Kit Lenses

February 6, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Canon 70 Million Cameras

Canon introduced the EOS 650 35mm camera in 1987. Since then, the company has produced over 70 million cameras (as of February 5, 2014).

That’s an astounding number of interchangeable lens cameras. Perhaps even more astounding is the fact that Canon has sold roughly 100 million lenses for those cameras over the same time period. While Canon hasn’t officially declared it produced that many lenses yet, I expect that announcement to come in the next few weeks. Canon reached the 90 million lens mark in May 2013 and it seems that Canon is cranking out 10 million lenses every 8-9 months.

The ratio of cameras to lenses is something I’m sure Canon wishes it could improve upon. [Read more…]

New Pentax K-Mount Lens Roadmap Shows New 70-200mm Lens Coming Soon

February 6, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Pentax_Lens_Roadmap-5

Pentax posted a new K-mount lens line up that shows a roadmap for upcoming lenses with a spot for a new 70-200mm zoom lens. Presumably, this would be a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, which is currently not covered in Pentax’s digital lens lineup. Of course, the DA 50-135mm f/2.8 ED lens covers this gap because all of Pentax’s DSLRs are APS-C camera.

Stretching the logic a bit further forces us to wonder whether or not a 70-200mm lens in the roadmap means that a Pentax full frame camera might finally make its way to market.

Panasonic G4K Launches in 2 Days, New Spec Leaks

February 5, 2014 By Eric Reagan

Panasonic 4K Lumix Camera

The more and more I see on the new Panasonic 4K Lumix camera, the more I am impressed. It is shaping up to be a groundbreaking 4K camera. The “game changer” moniker is really gone at this point for resolution and frame rate bumps; however, the G4K may be the most impressive launch we’ve seen in a prosumer camera in the past few years – especially if it comes in at the quoted “under $2000” price point.

Numerous rumors and leaks point to a Friday launch for the Panasonic 4K concept we saw at CES 2014. We believe the camera will be called the G4K and will offer a bevy of video-centric features. Previously rumored specs for the Panasonic Lumix G4K camera appear to be on the money and include: [Read more…]
