Canon Rebel T1i Hands-On Review at Rob Galbraith

March 26, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Rob Galbraith has a solid hands-on preview of the new Canon Rebel T1i (including some sample video clips):

A shallow focus effect can definitely be achieved with the Rebel T1i, but the 5D Mark II’s larger sensor – and resulting longer focal length for a given field of view – allows for shallow focus that is, well, shallower. How apparent or significant this is depends on what you’re trying to record, but in the one comparison we’ve done, the difference was dramatic.

Simplifying the Rule of Thirds

March 24, 2009 By Rich Legg

In this article, contributing author and stock photographer, Rich Legg, offers some tips on using the rule of thirds. You can learn more about Rich and how to connect with him at the end of this article.

One of the first things commonly emphasized to novice photographers by those who claim to be more knowledgeable on the subject is to “Follow the Rule of Thirds”. While this is sound advice, the phrase can be confusing especially to someone who has never had it explained to him or her.  For me personally, I can still picture my high school photography teacher Mr. Cressop explaining it on the blackboard back in 1981 (wow, that’s a long time ago!). The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes

March 21, 2009 By Eric Reagan

The Hot Shoe Diaries is a new book from Joe McNally.  It’s all about (you guessed it) lighting with hot shoe flashes.

I’m a little behind on the news of this new book from Mr. McNally; however, I just ordered a copy for myself.  I don’t buy too many photography books for myself anymore, but I consider this a must-have book.  Apparently, the first batch that Amazon.com had already sold out but they should be replenished within a couple of days (David Hobby says March 22).

I have heard nothing but the highest praise for this new book.  If you don’t believe me, see what The Strobist has to say about it.  There’s also a big PDF excerpt hosted by the publisher, Peach Pit.  It lists for $39.99 from the publisher, but Amazon’s got it for $26.39.

If you’re ready to get in line, you can pull the trigger over at Amazon.com.

Interview with Pro Sports Shooter Delly Carr

March 20, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Sony UK was kind enough to help out with access to Delly Carr, who chaired the panel of judges for the Sony World Photography Awards, for a quick interview on sports photography, photo gear and the digital imaging revolution. I encourage you to visit Mr. Carr’s site, http://www.sportshoot.com.au/, and peruse his portfolio a bit before diving into the interview.  It’s good stuff.

I see plenty of football (or soccer as we call it) images in your portfolio; however, there are also many stellar images from swimming, tennis, and other sports. So, what’s your favourite sport to shoot, and why?

Favourite sports ……. that’s a tough one. I am the biggest armchair sportsman around, so I love shooting anything within the sporting world. Anything that has water involved tends to sway towards favouritism I guess. But if I had to call just one sport, then it would be Triathlon. Three sports in one … swimming, cycling, and running, and then throw in some guts and glory into that mix. That’s why I love it so much.

Are you shooting with the Nikon D3 now or still on the D2x?

Shooting with the D3 right now.

How has the low light performance changed your shooting with the Nikon D3 as compared to the D2x?

In sports, shoots are conducted in the whole spectrum of lighting. Sunlight, low light, nighttime, stadium lighting etc etc. Being able to shoot in low light, without sacrificing quality. without sacrificing shutter speeds, without sacrificing apertures, is an absolute blessing. I now know the reason for missing a pic lies solely with me. And that has added fire into my belly. [Read more…]
