Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Dropped to $1,299… Is it still too much?

June 30, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Canon 24-70mm f4

The Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM appears to have received another $100 price drop. It was originally selling for $1,499 until it received a $100 price drop earlier this month. Now, it is showing up for $1,299 here at B&H Photo.

I suspect that Canon has had a hard time moving these at $1,500 a pop when the long-time favorite EF 24-105mm f/4L IS zoom is available for $1,149 retail and they’re always available refurbished for under $1000. In fact, right now, the Canon Store has a sale on refurb 24-105mm units at under $800. [Read more…]

Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di USD Lens for Sony Alpha Cameras Now In Stock

May 7, 2013 By Eric Reagan

Tamron 24-70mm

The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di USD lens for Sony Alpha mount is now shipping. Interestingly, the lens carries the same $1299 price tag for the Sony Alpha version even though it does not offer the Vibration Compensation function feature found in the Canon and Nikon versions.

(For those unfamiliar with Sony Alpha cameras, they feature sensor-based image stabilization and, therefore, do not require a lens-based image stabilization function.)

You can find the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di USD lens for Sony Alpha mount here at B&H Photo.

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS “Unicorn” Lens in the Works?

Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Rumors

For the better part of a decade, there have been rumors and wishes spread around the interwebs for a 24-70mm f/2.8 IS lens to come about from Canon. Recently, we’ve seen Tamron introduce such a lens that is available for Canon DSLRs. Despite its positive reception, it’s still not a Canon L lens.

A lot of Canon shooters figured all hope was lost when Canon introduced the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS lens earlier this Fall. For many, this was not the lens they were hoping for and the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with Image Stabilization seemed like a pipe dream even more than before.

However, new rumors of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens point to an actual announcement in the next 18 months – most likely around the end of next year. Canon Rumors reports that two sources have confirmed the lens’ existence and that it really will make it to market.

Is the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens the one you’ve been waiting for? What are you willing to pay for it? (BTW, my guess would be that it retails just south of $3k given the $2300 retail of the current non-IS version.)

Canon has taken the wraps off a pair of new stabilized lens – the EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM and EF 35mm f/2 IS USM, priced at $1500 and $850, respectively.  Both should be available in December 2012.

Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS Lens “On the Horizon”

October 31, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 24-70mm f4 IS Rumors

After the rumor about a 24-70mm f/2.8L IS lens from Canon a couple days ago, Canon Rumors is now tweaking that rumor with “reliable” info on a f/4 version of that lens.  Apparently, the f/4 version of the lens is on the horizon and could be arriving soon.

Seems like an odd lens to add to the mix, particularly with the solid 24-105mm f/4L IS that’s been selling like hotcakes since its release.  Of course, if the sharpness improvements are as substantial as the 24-70mm f/2.8L II were over the lens it replaced, a smaller and lighter lens might serve as a replacement and more directly compliment the popular 70-200mm lineup.

What would you think about a stabilized 24-70mm f/4L IS lens?  What would be the right price point for you?

Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS Rumors

October 30, 2012 By Eric Reagan

After the recently-introduced Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens, we are now starting to hear rumors of a version of this lens with image stabilization.  Of course, rumors of such a lens have been around for quite some time now, but Canon Rumors has received additional tips recently that point to a possibility that the lens could be in the pipeline.

Tamron has a stabilized 24-70mm f/2.8 lens that has received quite a bit of praise.  Who would be interested in a stabilized version of this lens directly from Canon?  What would be the right price point for you to pull the trigger?

Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Lens Patent

July 10, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon-24-70mm

A recent patent publication shows Canon has been looking into adding image stabilization to a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.  Given the recent announcement of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens (which still isn’t available), however, this doesn’t bode well for an IS version anytime soon.

Of course, there’s a Tamron lens that fills this void though…

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Delayed Until September

July 5, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon 24-70mm

Canon has been on a roll lately in the delay of lenses.  So it should come as no surprise that the highly anticipated Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens has been delayed until mid-September 2012.

The new 24-70mm f/2.8L lens was announced back in February (and was slated for availability in April 2012) alongside the Canon 24mm and 28mm prime lenses (both of which were slated for a June launch and are now readily available). This delay will put the refreshed 24-70mm lens availability at 7+ months after announcement (assuming Canon doesn’t delay it again).
