The 5D Mark III and Canon’s Response to the Nikon D4

January 21, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon's Response

Is history going to repeat itself with the Nikon D4 (see above mock-ad re: Nikon D3)? But this time on the video side of the DSLR market?

Nikon is really happy with its new D4 flagship.  My favorite quote from a Nikon person at CES was “We like to shut people up.”

Boy, did they…

There’s no doubt that the D4 is an amazing camera.  It’s amazing how far they’ve one-upped their own D3s.  I’m really hoping to get the chance to shoot some college basketball with one before the season is over.

For sports shooters, Canon’s 1D X and Nikon’s D4 should be close again.  I think the D3s edged out the 1D Mark IV in AF performance over series of real world tests I conducted in 2010.  However, I think the performance is closer than most forum postings would lead you to believe.

I’m curious to see how well these new cameras stack up against each other on the still image capture side; however, I’m even more interested in how Canon will respond to the Nikon D4’s key video capture features. [Read more…]

B&H has the Nikon D4 available for pre-order, which generally means they’re expecting them soon.  This is going to be a tough camera to find for awhile.  Better get on it early if you want one.

Nikon D4 Official Specs Confirmed, $6K Price Point

January 5, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D4

Lots of leaking on the Nikon D4 around the web today.  Basically, all the specs that we’ve heard recently turn out to be the real deal.  The price is gonna hurt a bit at $6000.  Hopefully, Nikon will keep the D800 in the sub-$3000 market, eh?

Regardless, it looks like the Canon 1D X has a real bit of competition from Nikon now – not to mention that the D4 looks to beat the 1D X to market by a month or so.

Take a look at the specs below to see how closely these cameras match up. [Read more…]

Nikon D4 Only Days Away?

January 4, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D4

The latest leaks and rumors peg the Nikon D4 for unveiling just prior to CES 2012.  A Nikon press invitation (see below) suggests something big is happening on January 6 and Nikon Rumors is convinced that the Nikon D4 with its 16MP FX sensor, XQD card format and lightning-fast frame rate of 11 fps is what’s coming.

That, and the above photo is of the real Nikon D4. [Read more…]

Nikon D4 with 16MP and XQD Cards Coming Soon?

December 12, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D4

It looks like both the Nikon D4 and D800 may be just around the corner.  Nikon Rumors picked up word that the full frame Nikon D4 would show up in January at or around PMA/CES 2012.

Nikon Rumors cites a high level of confidence for a 16.2MP shooter that can capture 11 fps and will use the recently announced XQD memory cards.

Nikon D4 Rumored Specs

  • 16.2 MP
  • 11 fps
  • 100-102,400 ISO (exp. to ISO 50 and ISO 204,800)
  • CF and XQD card slots
  • Compatible with new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
  • Integrated ethernet
  • Face detection/recognition
  • Improved video
  • Uncompressed video out via HDMI
  • Smooth aperture control during video capture
  • Improved 51 AF points
  • AF detection range down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
  • 9 cross-type AF sensors – operational up to f/8

Lots of questions about the camera still; however, should these turn out to be the real deal, the Nikon D4 looks to be a direct response to Canon’s recently-introduced EOS 1D X.  The AF operation at f/8 is sure to stir the forums and may be enough to sway the frustrated birders out there if the AF speed at f/8 is up to snuff.

Additionally, Nikon has lagged behind on video features thus far in the HDSLR race, so it will be interesting to see if this new flagship steps it up in that department as well and matches up to the seriously upgraded video features in the 1D X.
