SanDisk ‘4K-Ready’ Extreme Pro SD UHS-II Cards Now Available for Pre-Order

March 1, 2014 By Eric Reagan

SanDisk_Extreme_PRO_SDXC_280MBs_NoClass_Front_64GB_HR

SanDisk’s new high-speed Extreme Pro UHS-II cards are now available for pre-order.

Recall that this new line gets its major speed boost from the UHS-II bus interface. Most SD-compatible cameras currently on the market support UHS-I, at best. The only camera so far to support UHS-II is the new Fuji X-T1.

The new SanDisk UHS-II cards offer write speeds up to 250MB/s and read speeds up to 280MB/s. The Speed Class 3 rating delivers a minimum sustained write speed of 30MB/s, which is relevant to video shooters since it allows capture of the compressed 4K video formats we are starting to see on cameras. Expect this to become a bigger theme this year. [Read more…]

SanDisk Unveils 256GB Extreme Pro CF Card

September 12, 2013 By Eric Reagan

SanDisk Extreme Pro 256GB CF

SanDisk has released a new 256GB Extreme Pro CF card with minimum sustained write speeds of 65MB/s and max write speeds up to 140MB/s. Read speeds max out at 160MB/s.

The cards are UDMA Mode 7 compliant for fast buffer clearance on supported cameras. SanDisk touts the new high-capacity card as optimized for 4K video capture, which is further highlighted by the VPG-65 specification (i.e., min. sustained write speed of 65MB/s). [Read more…]

SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I Card Announced

January 17, 2011 By Eric Reagan

SanDisk has announced a new line of Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I cards. The UHS-I speed boost can be taken advantage with new UHS devices like the Nikon D7000.

The new Extreme Pro cards provide read/write speeds up to 45MB/sec.  When used with non-UHS devices, the Extreme Pro cards provide a max read/write speed of 25MB/sec.

SanDisk’s Extreme Pro SDHC UHS-I card is available in 8GB to 32GB capacities and retails from $109.99 to $349.99.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

In addition to the new Extreme Pro cards, SanDisk also announced a new Extreme Pro ExpressCard adapter for use with SDHC and SDXC UHS-I cards.  The Extreme Pro ExpressCard adapter retails for $49.99.  Check availability on Amazon.com.

SanDisk Extreme Pro CompactFlash Memory Cards

September 14, 2009 By Eric Reagan

SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB CF Card

SanDisk has announced a new series of faster CF cards – the Extreme Pro cards.  The big number that SanDisk is throwing out there is 90MB per second max read/write speeds. The question is: “Does it make a difference?”

Well, I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet; however, spec-wise the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 50D should be able to take advantage of the speed boost.  Both cameras feature UDMA support up to Mode 6 for a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 133MB/s, which is well within the new SanDisk cards specs.

Lori Grunin over at Cnet’s Crave took the new Extreme Pro cards for a spin the the Nikon D300s (I couldn’t find any documentation confirming the extent of UDMA support for the D300s) and the Canon 5D Mark II.  The differences were minimal in both cases.  The D300s produced the same frame rate with Extreme Pro and 60MB/s flavor of Extreme cards.  The Pro version was able to give about a 10% savings on buffer emptying after a burst of shots.  The results were similar in the 5D Mark II, which got a boost of 0.2 frames per second with the Pro model and an almost 20% discount emptying the buffer after a burst of shots. Hit up Lori’s test for all the facts. [50 kudos to Lori for the hard work.]

Prices? The 64GB model will set you back $811.99 direct from SanDisk – I’ll say that again . . . $811.99!  $507.99 for the 32GB model and $304.00 for the 16GB model.  Hardly a bargain for a 0.2 fps advantage…

Get the full run down on these new cards in the news release below.
