iPhone 4 Gets 5MP Camera, 720p HD Video, and Lots More

June 8, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Apple has just announced the iPhone 4.  Among many other new features, the iPhone 4 steps up its imaging capabilities with a 5-megapixel backlit sensor, 720p HD video capture, an LED flash and video light, touch to focus operation for both still and video and a 5x digital zoom.

What’s more, you can shoot from the front or back since cameras are on both sides of the iPhone 4.  The resolution drops to VGA-quality when using the front camera; however, the front-facing camera’s primary function seems to be dedicated to FaceTime, which is Apple’s name for video calling.

You can also download a new iMovie for iPhone app for $4.99, which gives you non-linear editing capabilities for your videos captured with your iPhone.  The iMovie app includes 5 themes, which allow you to add title sequences and different transitions.  Sliding your finger along the timeline lets you scrub through footage, just like traditional NLEs.  And, you can pinch to zoom to check out footage and details up close.  Using the iPhone’s GPS features, you can let iMovie for iPhone insert your location into your titles within videos.

If you want to put your movie to a soundtrack, you can choose from built-in music that matches the themes, or you can pull music from your song library on your iPhone.  You can also drop photos into you iMovie for iPhone project and it will automatically apply the Ken Burns effect.  Once you’re project is complete, you can email, upload to YouTube, send via MMS or share on MobileMe.  Once you sync your iPhone with your computer, the Movie will transfer during the sync process.

The iPhone 4 really steps up the game on the creativity side of things.  Only considering the new camera, HD video capture and iMovie app, the iPhone 4 seems pretty amazing.  However, these new updates only scratch the surface of the iPhone 4’s new features.  To get the full scoop, check out the iPhone 4 Overview at Tech Tilt.

Photoshop iPhone App Adds Easy Sharing Options for Twitter and Facebook

April 28, 2010 By Eric Reagan

When the iPhone Photoshop App launched last year, the biggest complaint I had with it was the limitation on sharing your photos directly from the App.  You couldn’t share photos from the App except through Photoshop.com – no Facebook, no Twitter, no nothing.

All that has changed with the new version 1.2 update to the iPhone Photoshop App.  Now, the App works the way it should have worked when it was first launched. [Read more…]

6 Tips for Taking Better Pictures With Your Cameraphone

November 12, 2009 By Chris Gampat

The Colors of The Wind

Just because your camera doesn’t have a large sensor or a nice lens doesn’t mean that you can’t take great pictures with it. As much as I love taking my Canon 5D Mark II out with me, she (her name is Dahlia) can be a bit bulky at times in my messenger bag. On top of that, I can’t exactly fully justify the purchase of a Micro Four Thirds camera or a Leica X1 in this economy. So at times, I find myself turning to my T-Mobile G1. Here’s how to take better photos with a cameraphone.

Adobe Photoshop App for iPhone – First Look

October 10, 2009 By Eric Reagan

Adobe has released a Photoshop app for the iPhone.  It’s a available for free from the iTunes App Store.

In the new Photoshop app, you get adjustment features like cropping, exposure, saturation and tint, along with a number of presets and stylized effects.  The overall user interface is pretty slick, which you would expect from Adobe.  You slide your fingertip across the image in several of the settings to add or reduce their intensity.  The crop tool is so smooth too – it just works the way cropping should.  Overall, the app feels very intuitive.

One thing I really like about the app is that it leaves your photos on your camera roll untouched and creates a copy for you to edit.  As a result, you get a second version of your image to process and you’ve always got your clean original if you want to do something else.  The new, edited photo is saved as the last image in your iPhone’s camera roll when you are done with it in the Photoshop app.  I’m not sure if or which other apps do this, but I appreciate this feature. The Best Camera

September 22, 2009 By Eric Reagan

World renowned photographer, Chase Jarvis, has developed an iPhone photography App called “The Best Camera.”  You may recall that we recently covered 24 Cool iPhone Photo Apps.  In that post, there were many photo apps which applied a variety of different filters and methods to share your photos with others; however, there was no one app that took care of it all.  That was Chase’s goal in creating The Best Camera – one app to rule them all.  [Read more…]
