Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III Firmware Update Version 1.1.2

April 30, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Canon has updated the firmware for the 1Ds Mark III to Version 1.1.2.

This firmware update (Version 1.1.2) incorporates the following improvements.

  1. Includes the following new features that were frequently requested by customers to the new firmware.
    1. Direct selection of AF points by the Multi-controller is added to C.Fn III-9.
    2. Alternate access to Exposure compensation is added to C.Fn IV-3.
  2. Improves the stability of AF accuracy in AI servo AF when shooting extremely low-contrast subjects.

Olympus E-520 Leak

April 27, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Olympus UK apparently slipped up and posted the model number of the forthcoming successor to the Olympus E-510 on an info page regarding image quality.  The offending text has been removed; however, this is the passage that was purportedly published by Olympus:

So that you don’t need to carry a heavy tripod or invest extra money into every single stabilised lens, Olympus integrated a built-in image stabiliser into the camera body of the E-3, E-510 and E-520. It stabilises up to 5 EV steps (up to 4 EV steps with the E-510 and E-520), making it the most effective solution on the market.

You can see the can see the redacted version of the page here.  Note that the “and E-520” is gone, which makes the listing of “E-3, E-510” read awkward since there is a comma in a list of only two items.  The cached version of the page shows this current version as well.  (via dslruser.co.uk)

Since the E-420 was just recently released, the follow-on of the E-520 certainly comes as no surprise.  We’ll keep our ears to the ground and pass along the latest news and rumors on the Olympus E-520 when it arrives.

Ricoh GR Digital II Review at Cnet

April 9, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Cnet has posted a review of the Ricoh GR Digital II.

The GR Digital II is a cute compact camera that might appeal to street photographers looking to step away from a rangefinder and into digital, but doesn’t deliver the features, performance, or image quality it should given its steep price tag.

Canon Still No. 1 in Europe

February 29, 2008 By Eric Reagan

Canon retained its #1 spot in Europe for 2007.  The increasing competition from Sony, Nikon and Pentax, which is good for all of us photographers, really tightened the group at the top of the food chain though.  Will it be enough to dethrone Canon?

We’ll see, but Canon remains the king for now. [Read more…]
