The latest rumblings on Canon’s big November 3 announcement suggest much of what we’ve heard before.
- Price: sub $15,000 – possible down to $10,000
- Image quality: Alexa good
- SDI outs
- XLRs (audio)
- Pivoting & detachable monitors and grips
- PL mount and EF mount options
- Resolution – 4k capture, 2k recording
Those specs are really nothing that hasn’t already been rumored and speculated. Although, the price point would be an impressive feat if it holds true. A sub-$10k price on a 4K camera could be an epic price point.
Additionally, Canon Rumors was told “at least two compact cine lenses” would be announced alongside the new camera, which adds to the existing PL-mount lenses (pictured above) that Canon slipped under the radar back at NAB. (See this post for reference.)
The hype for this camera(s) is huge. There was lots of buzz at PhotoPlus 2011 about this camera. Unfortunately, the only people I talked to who actually knew about it weren’t saying anything. It’s going to be an interesting day though – since RED has a big announcement up its sleeve as well, which seems to be a refined (and perhaps re-priced) Scarlet.

Except it isn’t a 4K camera, it is a 2K camera. Expect the RED announcement to blow it away.
