How to Capture Motion with Stroboscopic Lighting

September 3, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Check out this video from Karl Taylor as he walks through the setup of a stroboscopic sports shot using the Broncolor Scoro packs.

Aside from the lighting setup and programming the intervals into the power packs, the notion of moving the camera during the exposure in order to separate the exposures from the strobes is a very cool technique. As Karl notes, it prevents the strobe exposure from stacking up in areas of the subject that don’t move as much and it also does justice to the composition by separating the subject across the four exposures.

If you’ve never tried stroboscopic or multi-strobe flash photography before, you don’t necessarily need the $10k+ Broncolor Scoro packs. Many system speedlights (e.g., Canon & Nikon) offer a “Multi” mode that will allow you select multiple flash firings during one exposure, along with a frequency rate and power level. Obviously, they are going to be less powerful than the Scoros but can still produce solid stroboscopic results with proper planning.

Check out your flash manual to see if it is compatible.

Will Apple’s Rumored iPad Pro Feature a Wide Gamut (aka HDR) Display?

September 1, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Apple Wide Gamut Display Patents

One of the big rumors for Apple over the past couple of years has been about an iPad Pro model. The rumors and leaks are well documented and Apple’s faithful fanboys expect it feature a 12.9″ display – as compared to the 9.7″ iPad Air 2 display.

I have a terrible pastime of reading patent applications on the weekends and I happened to notice several published applications from last week indicating that Apple is sorting out both server-side processing and device-level processing of HDR or wide gamut video and images, along with the backward compatibility. Watch This Time Lapse of Seoul, South Korea that Took 3 Years to Make

August 31, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Photographer Noe Alonzo captured close to 3TB of images over the course of three years to make this time lapse tour of Seoul, South Korea.

As he puts it, “Three years of no social life, three years of ditching my friends and events and ignoring my girlfriend so I could be out on some roof. I’d say each shot was on average 6 hours of work. Some shots I reshot 4-5 times until I got it right.”

The gear he cites as used on this project includes: [Read more…]

August 29, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Panasonic_GH4_Mirrorless_Digital_Camera_Body

Panasonic’s GH4 has been rumored to get an upgrade with a V-Log recording option for wider dynamic range and greater flexibility in color grading. We saw this feature alongside the anamorphic firmware upgrade back at NAB 2015.

What we didn’t know at the time was when it would be released and if it would cost extra. We still don’t have answers to these questions but new rumors from Digicame-info suggest that Panasonic may introduce a new model, the GH4R, which comes with V-Log capabilities out of the box. [Read more…]
