Layout is a New App from Instagram for Combining Photos

March 24, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Layout from Instagram

Instagram has launched a new app, called Layout, which lets you combine multiple photos into a single, square image.

That’s something we have all done since nearly the beginning of Instagram. However, we have done that without the help of Instagram and, instead, used apps like Diptic and other collage-making apps to export images to our phones’ camera rolls and then upload to Instagram.

While Layout is still a separate app that you must install, it does include a share to Instagram feature within to make it a quicker process.

Layout also has a facial recognition features that will allow you to choose photos with only faces of people from your camera roll. Additionally, a Photo Booth feature lets you capture photos that instantly fill your layout.

For now, Layout is only available for iOS devices with support for Android promised in the coming months. You can get Layout for free here on the iTunes App Store.

Legendary Lighting Inventor Paul C. Buff Dies at Age 78

March 23, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Remembering Paul C. Buff (via Paul C. Buff, Inc.)

Alien Bees, White Lightning and Einsteins were just three of the incredible product lines Paul C. Buff brought to the photography industry but each are still workhorses among many professionals every day.

The Paul C. Buff name has carried a reputation of performance, reliability and affordability in lighting products over the past several years. With products invented and manufactured in Nashville, Tennessee since 1980, it is one of the most respected brands in the industry.

I learned earlier today that he died last week on March 14, 2015 at age 78. The Paul C. Buff, Inc. website released a statement on his passing. [Read more…]

Canon 5Ds vs. Canon 5D Mark III Comparison

March 23, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon-5Ds-vs-5D-Mark-III-Comparison

When Canon announced the new 5Ds and 5Ds R cameras, it stoked the megapixel war flames once again by thoroughly trouncing the resolution of the Nikon D810 and Sony A7R cameras, both of which offer a mere 36MP full frame sensor.

While the 5Ds and 5Ds R are the latest to the 5D line, Canon is leaving the very popular 5D Mark III in the line-up. The Canon 5D Mark III was introduced in March 2012. By Canon’s prior timelines, the 3-year point is the proper upgrade timeframe. However, DSLRs have plateaued somewhat over the past few years and the need to upgrade every 2-3 years is less compelling for photographers and, by extension, camera manufacturers.

Additionally, the 5D Mark III and 5Ds/5Ds R are, in many ways, very different cameras for very different purposes. Even though the cameras are very similar from the outside, what’s inside makes them very different indeed. [Read more…]

Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R Now Available for Pre-Order

March 23, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Canon 5Ds

The Canon 5Ds and 5Ds R are now available for pre-order. So far, this is the camera of 2015 with its 50MP full frame sensor. I suspect initial availability will be limited to those who pre-order early, so you had better get in line now if you want one from the earliest shipments in June. You can pre-order here at B&H Photo.

Next Major Adobe Creative Cloud Release Requires OS X 10.9 or Higher

March 21, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Creative Cloud

It is common practice for software companies to stop supporting older operating systems at some point. However, Adobe’s upcoming major Creative Cloud update will require Mac OS X 10.9 or higher to run applications like Photoshop, Premiere Pro and After Effects. OS X 10.9 was released less than two years ago. That is pretty cut-throat for OS support.

Of course, Adobe claims this is all for the good of the user “in order to take advantage of the latest operating system and technologies.” With NAB around the corner, we will probably see what’s under the curtain the next two or three weeks.

Lightroom 6 is a little more lenient and will support OS X 10.8 and above.

Regardless, if you are stuck on an older version of Mac OS X due to support for legacy software apps, then it is time to make a decision about what’s more important to your workflow. Or, at the very least, figure out a dual boot scenario that works for you and your system.

If you want to upgrade, of course, Apple offers a free update to OS X 10.10.

The next major Creative Cloud release is presumed to support at least Windows 7 and up, although Adobe has not officially confirmed that yet. We’ll let you know if that changes.
