Making Sense of Memory Card Read/Write Speeds and USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt Data Transfer Rates

December 6, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Making Sense of Memory Card Read/Write Speeds and USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt Data Transfer Rates

A common problem for many photographers is understanding memory card speeds, hard drive speeds and data transfer rates. It seems we’ve got all kinds of numbers, specs and measurements to look at when it comes to sizing up the speed of our memory cards and computer peripherals.

I recently received a question from a reader about a slow import process from his memory cards into Adobe Lightroom. He was using a USB 2 card reader and wondered whether that could be the culprit. And, if so, would upgrading to a new iMac with USB 3.0 and a Thunderbolt fix the problem if he had a USB 3 or Thunderbolt card reader? (To my knowledge, there are no Thunderbolt CF or SD card readers shipping at the time of this article. There is a Thunderbolt SxS card reader for the pro video market; however, it is currently listed as discontinued.)

Now, onto the specifics of his questions and to breakdown the technical jargon so we can make sense of how to get the fastest memory card transfers for our ever-growing file sizes… [Read more…]

Canon 6D Product Advisory Issued

December 6, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon has issued a product advisory for the Canon 6D relating to the inability for movies shot on the 6D to playback on YouTube. This appears to be aimed at users who pull a card out of their camera and upload directly to YouTube.

The fix (for now) is to save the file via ImageBrowser EX and then upload to YouTube. If you already go through an editing and exporting process for your HDSLR videos, then you don’t need to worry about this problem.

More details in the full product advisory below. [Read more…]

New Canon EOS-M Model w/ Viewfinder Coming in 2013?

December 5, 2012 By Eric Reagan

This could be as much of an educated guess as a rumor. Nevertheless, recent rumors point to a new Canon EOS-M model that sports an electronic viewfinder to be unveiled in late 2013.

One of the most lamented non-features of the Canon EOS-M has been the absence of a viewfinder. Enthusiasts were lambasting Canon before the EOS-M ever hit store shelves over the lack of an EVF. While Canon never confirms what’s coming down the line for its camera systems, executives have emphasized that the EOS-M was its first foray into the mirrorless market and that there will me more cameras built for different users.

Additional rumors point to the styling of the camera as similar to the current EOS-M model and that it won’t be taking a retro design like some of the other mirrorless models out there (e.g., Olympus, Fuji, etc.).

The short was directed by Patrick Moreau of stillmotion. Aside from showing off the footage of the C100, it’s a well-told story that’s worth a few minutes of your time.
