Canon Rebel T4i and New Mirrorless Camera Next Month?

May 16, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Canon Rumors

Canon Rumors is reporting on a tip received from a known and credible source that Canon will launch the new Rebel T4i/650D alongside a new mirrorless camera in June 2012.

The Rebel T4i (if that’s what it ends up being called) is inevitable.  The entry level Rebel T3i is due for its annual update.

The more interesting proposition, however, is a new mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. [Read more…]

Varavon Armor Mini Rig and ProFinder Review

May 15, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Varavon Armor Mini

The Varavon Armor Mini Rig and ProFinder are available for HDSLRs like the 5D Mark II and 7D.

The Armor Mini Rig is a slightly different take on some of the traditional HDSLR cages out there.  I’ve been using an Armor Mini Rig that Varavon sent me to check out with my 5D Mark II for a couple of months now.  In short, it’s a nice, affordable cage that can be a solid foundation for a decent rig. Canon 5D Mark III Short Film: ‘Incident on Marmont Ave’

May 15, 2012 By Eric Reagan

[vimeo https://vimeo.com/40762760 w=640&h=360]

Mitch over at Planet5D.com just announced a new short film that they shot entirely the 5D Mark III – ‘Incident on Marmont Ave.’  I talked with Mitch about this a bit at NAB this year and he was (justifiably) stoked about how the project was coming together.

Some details on how and why the short was created:

The intent for this project was to create one of the first narrative films showcasing the new 5D Mark III and its long-awaited features but to also do it on a lower end budget. We have seen that many of the “regular” DSLR influencers have been moving more toward the higher end cameras (C300, Epic etc.) and are shooting projects that are way outside of the budget of most independent filmmakers. While these influencers are still fantastic sources for generating high-end interest, an entire group of film and DSLR users don’t have sources that are relevant to them.

Our project is directly aimed at DSLR filmmakers who are shooting on lower budgets frequently. We designed the entire project to meet the budget, time frame and actual considerations that lower budget filmmakers have for their projects. This is a group that is deeply committed to a high quality final image but wants the lower price tag and flexibility of a DSLR.

Head over to Planet5D for more details about the cast, crew and production.

Canon 7D Hardcore Durability Test

May 14, 2012 By Eric Reagan

While the above test from Digital Rev is not quite the serious endeavor, I’m still quite amazed at the abuse the Canon 7D took and the functionality it retained after the fact.

Lightroom 4 on the Mac App Store

May 14, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Lightroom 4

Adobe Lightroom 4 is available on the Mac App Store now.  That said, I can’t think of a reason to buy it via the App Store instead of from Adobe or another retailer like B&H Photo.

Here’s why: [Read more…]

Nikon D600, Cheaper Full Frame Camera Rumored

May 12, 2012 By Eric Reagan

Nikon D600

The Nikon D600 may be the camera that a lot of prosumer shooters have been waiting for . . . that is, if rumors of its specs and price point turn out to be true.  Nikon Rumors has posted rumored specifications of a 24MP full frame D600 set to be released later this summer (pre-Photokina, which is in September).

The big kicker though is a price point that is rumored to be as low as $1500 (half the price Nikon D800).  This would open up full frame cameras to a whole new market.

Key rumored specs include:

  • 24MP CMOS sensor (manufactured by Sony)
  • HD video capture
  • 39 AF points
  • 5fps
  • Dual SD card slots (with Eye-Fi support)
  • 1/250s flash sync
  • Built-in GPS
  • No internal AF motor (autofocusing w/ AF-S lenses only)

What do you think?  Would those of you considering APS-C cameras like the D7000 or D300s/D400 be interested in a D600 with the above specs?
