Quick Breakdown: Midday Photos With Off-Camera Flash

October 19, 2011 By Eric Reagan

TTL Flash Final

One of the challenges of shooting outdoor photos in the middle of the afternoon is dealing with harsh shadows and overexposing the sky if your subject is not directly lit by the sun.  While it would be nice to wait for the right light later in the evening, there are a lot of times when your subject won’t be waiting around with you – particularly when you’re dealing with kids. Sony NEX-5N Review

October 18, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Sony NEX-5N

The Sony NEX-5N is part of Sony’s second go-round at the mirrorless camera format. The NEX-3 and NEX-5 were largely regarded as a success – and for the most part the NEX-C3 and NEX-5N models which followed on a year later have been held with similar regard.

What you need to know up front is that the Sony NEX-5N is not a perfect camera.  It’s a solid (bordering on excellent) offering from Sony; however, it has some niggling problems and concerns that take some of the luster off of it.  (Update 11/9/11:  The core defect appears to have been fixed. See details below.) [Read more…]

Amazing Tech: Rendering Synthetic Objects into Existing Photos

October 18, 2011 By Eric Reagan

The objects in the bottom row of images have been placed in the original photos after the fact.  What’s so impressive though, is that lighting and color characteristics of the objects and scenes interact with each other.  That is, the objects appear to be lit by the existing lighting of the scene and, at the same time, cast new shadows in the scene.

Check out the video below for a more in-depth look. [Read more…]

Quick Portrait Breakdown

October 17, 2011 By Eric Reagan

Final Portrait

One of the goals of my wife is to have great portraits of each of our children at age 3.  We’ve been pushing our luck with our current 3-year-old, who turns 4 in a couple months.  While we’ve shot tons of images of her this year; however, we’ve not taken that right shot with just the right dress, bow and smile . . . until last weekend.
