How to Add Effects to Audio “Tracks” in DaVinci Resolve 12

August 4, 2015 By Eric Reagan

How-to-Add-Effects-to-Audio-Tracks-in-DaVinci-Resolve-12

I’ve been using the new DaVinci Resolve 12 beta for the past week since its release. Not really for mission critical stuff, but duplicating projects when I have extra time and learning the work flow. I’ve said before that the new Resolve is what Final Cut Pro X should have been and I’m thinking more and more like that today.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much in terms of training or forum conversations regarding the little features that matter to my workflow. I was ready to kick Resolve 12 to the curb because there didn’t appear to be a way to add audio effects to an entire track via the Track Mixer.

It’s a little different than other NLEs but it’s not too hard to do. [Read more…]

DaVinci Resolve 12 is a Full Blown NLE and It Looks Incredible (and it’s free)

July 13, 2015 By Eric Reagan

DaVinci Resolve 12

One of the most impressive things I saw at NAB 2015 was Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve 12. Looking back, I can’t believe that I haven’t written about this yet. But maybe this timing is actually a little better since it is supposed to become available in the next few days.

Right now, the big three video editing platforms are Premiere Pro CC, Final Cut Pro X and Avid Media Composer. All have their fans and faithful user bases. But I think there is about to be another big player with Resolve 12. [Read more…]

Blackmagic’s Pocket Cinema Camera was Used for Scenes in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”

June 1, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Avengers-Pocket-Cinema-Camera

Avengers: Age of Ultron cinematographer Ben Davis, who also shot Guardians of the Galaxy, used the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to get shots within the action sequences of the film.

We previously saw the Canon 5D Mark II show up as a crash-cam and POV camera on Captain America. The Pocket Cinema Camera doesn’t really come off as a surprise to work in tight spaces for action shots. It is smaller and cheaper than HDSLRs like the 5D Mark II. Additionally, it has an incredible 12-bit RAW image in a form-factor the size of a compact camera.

Check out the details of how Davis used the Pocket Cinema Camera in the press release below. [Read more…]

Blackmagic URSA Mini is the (almost) Most Affordable 1080p 120fps Camera

April 26, 2015 By Eric Reagan

Blackmagic URSA Mini-4

Ok. Sure, there’s the GoPro HERO4 Black. But let’s be real about what we mean when we say “camera.” I am a huge fan of GoPro cameras but they are not the first choice for top-notch video production unless you need some POV shots of some extreme sports.

There are plenty of cameras out there that will capture 120fps but few do it at 1920 x 1080 resolution and none of those do it at the $3K entry-price of the URSA Mini 4K camera. Sony almost gets us there with the A7s; however, it is limited to 720p resolution at 120 fps. The Panasonic GH4 also gets close with a variable frame rate mode delivering 96fps in 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Still, no one is delivering a camera close to the prowess of the URSA Mini in the same DSLR-price ballpark. [Read more…]
