We all know that the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3S are geared toward sports photographers.  While the cameras have found their way into many other photography niches, at their core, these cameras are made for shooting sports.  As an action-oriented camera, nothing defines its performance more so than its autofocus speed and accuracy.

When shooting sports, we can forgive images that are a bit noisier in one camera over the other, and we can forgive a camera with lower resolution than its competitor.  What we cannot forgive, however, is out of focus images.  When shooting sports and other action, autofocus performance is a paramount concern. The Nikon D3100 is the first Nikon DSLR to feature 1080p video capture – and it does so at 24p with full time autofocus.

The D3100 is an entry-level DSLR with its $699.95 price tag, which includes a kit lens.  Nikon has traded up from its previous 12MP DX sensor, to a new 14.2MP CMOS sensor with Nikon’s new EXPEED 2 image processing system. [Read more…]

Nikon Mirrorless Camera Coming Soon

Bloomberg is reporting that Nikon President, Makoto Kimura, has confirmed that Nikon will introduce a new interchangeable lens camera (ILC) soon, which could come prior to the end of Nikon’s current fiscal year (i.e., before April 2011).  Kimura also revealed that the new Nikon ILC “will probably have an enhanced function for video recording.” [Read more…]

Extreme ISO Settings With the D3s, 1D Mark IV and Lightroom 3

I’ve been digging into Lightroom 3 for a couple of days now.  I’m a big fan of the improvements – happy to see my video files, love the tethered shooting capability, as well as the improved speed. Last night, however, I decided to dig up some of my photos from the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3s ISO comparisons and take a closer look at the improved noise control that we’ve all heard so much about.

While I experienced a taste of what was to come in the Lightroom 3 beta, I was not prepared for the magnitude of improvement that I saw in the images as I wiped my Lightroom 2 adjustments and made new adjustments in Lightroom 3’s noise control panel.
