Lightroom 3 Noise Reduction: To Be Used in Moderation

June 26, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Yesterday, I showed off a little of what Lightroom 3’s noise killing prowess could do.  And then, I started looking back at some of my basketball photos from this season, most of which were shot at ISO 3200.  Some of them could use a little help from Lightroom 3’s noise reduction panel; however, some looked just fine, even with a little bit of grain. Adobe Lens Profile Creator Prerelease 2 Available

June 15, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Adobe has made a second prerelease version of the Lens Profile Creator available in Adobe Labs.  As you may know, the Adobe Lens Profile Creator is a utility designed to work with Photoshop CS5, Camera Raw and Lightroom that allows you to build custom profiles for lenses in your kit.  These profiles “describe[] the types of optical aberrations that exist in a particular lens and prescribe[] how to correct the lens distortions in an image captured from the same lens.”

More details and download instructions over at Adobe Labs.

Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop CS5

May 20, 2010 By Eric Reagan

While perusing Adobe TV tonight, I ran across this nice tutorial on using the Merge to HDR Pro feature in Photoshop CS5.  In the 10-minute video, Julieanne Kost provides a pretty basic overview of HDR and then digs into the meat of the Merge to HDR Pro feature. In the last couple of minutes of the video, she shows off the power of HDR Toning if you just have a single image to work with.  If you’ve been thinking about trying HDR with CS5, this should get you up to speed rather quickly.

If the embedded video above isn’t working for some reason, you can also find the video over at Adobe TV.

Restoring Torn Photos in Photoshop

May 17, 2010 By Eric Reagan

I caught this great tutorial earlier today from Matt Kloskowski on restoring torn photos with Photoshop.  In it, he takes a photo that’s torn in half and does a super quick fix that looks pretty darn good.  If you’ve ever tried to fix an old photo before and don’t know this trick, you’ll appreciate it.

If the embedded video above isn’t working for some reason, you can also find the video over at Adobe TV.

Adobe Camera RAW 6.1 Release Candidate Available

May 13, 2010 By Eric Reagan

Adobe has made a release candidate of Camera Raw 6.1 available for download in Adobe Labs.  This version includes RAW file support for the following new cameras:

  • Canon EOS 550D (Digital Rebel T2i/ EOS Kiss X4 Digital)
  • Kodak Z981
  • Leaf Aptus-II 8
  • Leaf Aptus-II 10R
  • Mamiya DM40
  • Olympus E-PL1
  • Panasonic G2
  • Panasonic G10
  • Sony A450

Additional release notes are indicated on the download page for Camera Raw 6.1.

Remember, this is a release candidate, which means it has been pretty well tested and Adobe thinks it is ready for full release; however, it’s recommended that you keep production work to prior versions until the official release drops.  Expect it to come soon though.  Release candidates mean that the final versions are just around the corner.
