The Atomos Ninja Star was announced at NAB 2014 and touted as a ProRes recorder for the GoPro. The immediate downside that everyone saw was that it only recorded to CFast cards.
CFast cards are great from a speed standpoint; however, a 60GB SanDisk CFast card still costs $650! That’s a tough pill to swallow for a $300 recorder. While some more recently released cards are lower, they are still well above CF card prices. [Read more…]
Red Giant has updated its Universe plug-in suite with 9 new effects, as well as updates to existing products. If you aren’t familiar with the suite, Red Giant Universe is a new subscription-based (but you can also purchase a lifetime license) plug-in for video editing applications. Avid is one of the latest software vendors to move to a subscription software model with Media Composer available for a $49.99/mo subscription price. The Panasonic GH4 is the first 4K camera I have tested. I have lots of good things to say about it and will have plenty more sample video along the way. Lighting companies are really starting to do some cool things with LED lights. Several companies are starting to offer LED fresnel lights that run cool and deliver high outputs of light on a minimal power draw. Lumos’ Hawk line was on display at NAB 2014, where it was showing off a 150w and a 50w version of the LED fresnel lights. [Read more…]

The new Blackmagic Design Studio Camera that was announced earlier this month at NAB 2014 is now in stock and shipping. This is the HD version that’s now in stock. Recall that there is also a 4K version in the pipeline.
The Blackmagic Studio Camera features a Micro Four Thirds lens mount and appears to have the same HD sensor as found in the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

One of the cool things about going to trade shows is meeting the people who create products we use. And it’s a bonus when you catch them their first year off of a new product launch that we may or may not know where it’s going. The booths are smaller. The crowds aren’t quite as large. And, you can have some longer, uninterrupted conversations.
